The 1954 victory concluded the resistance against French colonialism, allowing the North to enter a period of building socialism while serving as a vast rear base for the struggle to liberate the South. In Điện Biên, once a fierce battlefield, the locality gradually restored its economy, stabilized the lives of its people, built infrastructure, and consolidated its political system. Despite facing numerous shortages, the soldiers and people of this region exerted every effort to simultaneously maintain production and remain ready to support the beloved southern frontline.
Throughout the resistance against American invaders, Điện Biên consistently affirmed its role as a resilient rear area. Many elite youths volunteered to join the army and fight on the most brutal battlefields, with many heroically sacrificing their lives. In the rear, women and the elderly took turns in production to ensure adequate food supplies, maintaining the rhythm of life and the strength of the Northern rear base. Patriotic emulation movements and examples of individuals overcoming adversity spread widely, creating a powerful impetus for the dual task of construction and combat.
The spirit of Điện Biên Phủ, a symbol of the determination to fight and to win, was further forged and promoted in this new phase. It is characterized by the courage to think and act, a refusal to retreat before difficulties, the close-knit solidarity between ethnic groups, and an unwavering faith in the Party’s leadership. This very spirit empowered the army and people nationwide, creating the position and strength necessary to reach a complete victory. The 1975 Great Spring Victory was the convergence of national strength, to which localities that were once fierce battlefields like Điện Biên contributed significantly.
Following national reunification, Điện Biên entered a new era filled with challenges. However, its revolutionary traditions and solidarity remained the foundation for gradual development. The sentimental bond between Hồ Chí Minh City and Điện Biên has been continuously strengthened, becoming a highlight of mutual support between regions. This relationship deepened significantly in 2015 when both localities agreed to step up coordination to assist Điện Biên in poverty reduction and attract investment.
This profound camaraderie is most visible during times of crisis. When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out fiercely in Hồ Chí Minh City, Điện Biên province unhesitatingly sent teams of doctors and nurses into the heart of the pandemic to assist in treatment and prevention. Conversely, Hồ Chí Minh City has shown great care for Điện Biên by providing hundreds of billions of VND to invest in infrastructure, socio-economic development, and improving the people’s lives. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory, Hồ Chí Minh City provided VND 85 billion in support, including VND 50 billion for rural electricity grids in the former Điện Biên Đông district and VND 35 billion for the restoration of the Hill E2 historical site.
This shared bond is not only a vivid testament to North-South solidarity but also a continuation of a tradition of collective effort that has led to glorious victories throughout history. From a highland province once lacking in many aspects, Điện Biên has successfully transformed, achieving significant milestones across economy, culture, and security. During the 2021-2025 period, the GRDP grew by an average of 8.48% per year, with the economic scale in 2025 estimated at over 17.6 trillion VND, while the poverty rate dropped to approximately 17.66%.
In the current vibrant atmosphere of May 2026, Điện Biên is organizing numerous practical activities to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification and the 72nd anniversary of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory. These range from educational programs and incense-offering ceremonies to cultural and sporting events, attracting a wide range of participants. These activities promote the cultural and historical image of Điện Biên while educating the younger generation on patriotism.
Specifically, from April 25 to May 22, 2026, the provincial Library is hosting exhibitions on President Hồ Chí Minh and General Võ Nguyên Giáp. A major art program is scheduled for May 7 to celebrate these twin victories alongside the 136th anniversary of President Hồ Chí Minh’s birth.
From the 1954 victory to the 1975 triumph, the power of the people and the spirit of national independence are clearly visible. Điện Biên is not only a site of historical victory but also a symbol of the silent, persistent contributions of soldiers and civilians. The sweat and blood of those in the remote Northwestern frontier have contributed to the nation’s golden history, serving as a powerful motivation for Điện Biên to continue rising toward a civilized and prosperous future.
