Developing tourism as a driver of growth

ĐBP - In recent years, Điện Biên province has stepped up efforts to promote its tourism potential, diversify its products and expand connections with tourism markets. Alongside its historical sites, natural landscapes and the distinctive cultural identities of its ethnic communities, linking tourism promotion with investment and trade partnerships is opening up new development opportunities and helping drive local economic growth.

As part of the province’s recent international investment promotion activities for 2026, the “Điện Biên - Fascinating discoveries” famtrip gave travel businesses and representatives from localities an opportunity to explore and assess the province’s tourism potential and the feasibility of developing its tourism products firsthand. The program was not only an opportunity to promote Điện Biên as a destination but also aimed to connect partners, identify cooperation opportunities and develop itineraries tailored to the needs of different visitor markets. These efforts are helping the province showcase its advantages, strengthen links with investors and gradually turn its potential into concrete projects and tourism products.

Alongside investment promotion, Điện Biên is seeking to expand tourism partnerships with Yunnan province in China, Luang Prabang in Laos, northern Thailand and northern Laos. A cross-border tourism route connecting Yunnan, Điện Biên, Luang Prabang and Thailand has been established, opening up prospects for Điện Biên to become more deeply integrated into the regional tourism network. This cross-regional itinerary will connect historical and cultural heritage with natural attractions while offering visitors more travel options.

According to Phạm Văn Thăng, Head of the Tourism Operations Division at the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, turning promotional connections into competitive tourism products requires further assessment of transport conditions, border-crossing procedures, length of stay, service quality and coordination among businesses. Survey findings need to be translated into itineraries, operational plans and service standards suited to different visitor groups.

In this context, culture is not only a heritage to be preserved but also a resource for developing distinctive tourism products. Unique customs, performing arts, traditional clothing, cuisine and community life can all serve as the basis for immersive experiences that help visitors gain a deeper understanding of the region and its people.

To make effective use of these resources, the cultural sector is focusing on linking heritage preservation with tourism development and strengthening the role of local communities in safeguarding and presenting traditional values. When residents participate directly in providing services, organizing experiential activities and promoting local culture, tourism not only creates additional livelihoods but also helps sustain cultural spaces and raise awareness of heritage conservation.

Alongside community-based cultural experiences, the system of historical sites associated with the Điện Biên Phủ Victory remains a defining feature of the destination. The Điện Biên Phủ Victory Museum, the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Headquarters in Mường Phăng, A1 Hill, Him Lam, the former central command post of the Điện Biên Phủ stronghold and the Điện Biên Phủ Victory Monument offer valuable opportunities for domestic and international visitors to explore history.

Ecotourism, wellness retreats, hot springs and community-based tourism are further broadening the range of experiences available and diversifying itineraries for visitors exploring Điện Biên.

In the first nine months of the year, Điện Biên province welcomed an estimated 1.272 million visitors, up 18% from the same period in 2025, including more than 9,500 international visitors. Tourism revenue was estimated at over VND 2.3 trillion, also an increase of 18% year on year.

Alongside the successful organization of festivals promoting local destinations and traditional cultural values, Mường Thanh pedestrian street has opened to the public. The province has also recognized four additional tourist attractions: Nà Sự village, Phiêng Lơi village, the Thành Bản Phủ historical and cultural site, and the A Pa Chải flagpole. This brings the total number of officially recognized tourist attractions in the province to 12.

Looking ahead, implementation of the Điện Biên provincial Tourism Development Scheme for 2026-2030, with a vision to 2035, and the tourism stimulus program for the final months of 2026 will provide further momentum for improving tourism products, strengthening promotion and expanding regional partnerships.

By gradually shifting from promoting its potential to building market connections, Điện Biên aims to develop more marketable tourism products and enhance visitor experiences. By linking historical heritage, cultural identity and natural landscapes with services, investment and regional markets, tourism can unlock further growth opportunities, create jobs, expand markets for local products and contribute to sustainable socioeconomic development.
