Điện Biên: Writing new chapters from glorious past

ĐBP - The days of May always bring back unforgettable milestones in the history of the Vietnamese nation. And today, May 7, marking the 72nd anniversary of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory, the land of Điện Biên once again becomes a sacred meeting place where people from across the country return to remember, pay tribute to, and take pride in a victory that was “resounding across the five continents and shaking the globe” while also gaining a deeper appreciation of the value of peace today.

Though decades have passed, every May the memories of the 56 days and nights of “digging through mountains, sleeping in trenches, enduring relentless rain, and surviving on compressed rice balls” come vividly alive again. Historical sites such as Hill A1, the General De Castries Bunker, Mường Thanh Bridge, and the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Headquarters in Mường Phăng are no longer simply tourist destinations, but living testimonies to a fierce era of war. Every inch of land here is soaked with the sweat and blood of generations of soldiers who sacrificed their lives for independence and freedom.

Every May, as flamboyant flowers bloom brilliantly red, crowds of visitors, officials, and soldiers from across the country return to visit the Hill A1 historical site.

Amid today’s peaceful rhythm of life, these historical landmarks continue quietly telling stories to future generations. On Hill A1, bomb craters still bear the scars of a brutal past. Inside the De Castries Bunker, the atmosphere seems to retain the echoes of the decisive historic battle. Beside Mường Thanh Bridge, the Nậm Rốm River flows gently, witnessing the transformation of a land once at the center of war and now rising strongly with each passing day.

Leaving the center of the Mường Thanh Basin, the journey to Mường Phăng - once home to the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Headquarters - opens into another deeply reflective space. Hidden within the old growth forest, General Võ Nguyên Giáp’s working hut, communication bunker, trenches, and Hoàng Cầm kitchens remain preserved almost intact. Every narrow path and every humble shelter beneath the vast forest canopy seems to recreate those tense yet resolute days when historic commands were issued, contributing to a victory that echoed throughout the world.

During these historic days of May, Điện Biên seems to wear a renewed yet solemn appearance. Flags and flowers line the streets, while tribute and memorial activities take place with deep respect and emotion. Within this atmosphere, every journey back to Điện Biên is not merely a trip of sightseeing, but a return to the sacred historical memory of the nation - an opportunity to more profoundly appreciate the peace of today, achieved through the sweat, blood, and sacrifice of previous generations.

Colonel Nguyễn Văn Sang, a visitor from Hà Nội, shared that although he had watched many documentaries and read numerous books about the Điện Biên Phủ Victory, standing directly on Hill A1 or descending into the General De Castries Bunker brought emotions far deeper and more authentic than he had imagined. The historical setting seemed to come alive before his eyes, with every relic and artifact evoking heroic stories. The journey helped him better understand the true value of peace today.

Not only tourists return to learn more about history and the sacrifices of earlier generations, but these days Điện Biên is also quietly marked by the return of veteran groups from across the country to the former battlefield. At the A1 National Martyrs’ Cemetery and many historical sites, incense is lit in solemn silence, forming a bridge between past and present.

Among the quiet stream of visitors, Trần Văn Hùng, a veteran from Tuyên Quang province, stood silently for a long time before the rows of gravestones at the A1 National Martyrs’ Cemetery. Speaking slowly, almost as if talking to himself, he said: “We were not directly present at Điện Biên in 1954, but standing here still feels like standing amidst the blood and sacrifice of the nation. Every gravestone is a reminder that today’s peace did not come naturally. Our generation came later, but our responsibility is no lighter. Seeing students and young people offering incense and asking about history gives me confidence that memory is not being forgotten, but naturally carried forward.”

Veterans and students interact at the Hill A1 historical site.

In the stillness among the mountains of Điện Biên, his words blended softly into the drifting incense smoke, extending another bridge connecting wartime memories to the present day. Not only for visitors and veterans returning from all parts of the country, May has long become a sacred and meaningful time for the people of Điện Biên themselves. During these occasions, agencies, schools, and organizations frequently organize visits for staff and students to historical sites for remembrance ceremonies. These journeys are not merely extracurricular activities, but vivid lessons in history that nurture patriotism, gratitude, and a sense of responsibility among younger generations.

Year after year, these activities of remembrance and historical education continue quietly yet persistently, becoming part of the spiritual life of local people. It is this natural continuity that prevents history from becoming something distant, transforming it instead into an inner source of strength that nurtures determination and aspirations for the future.

Nguyễn Thị Hà, an 11th-grade student at Điện Biên Phủ High School, shared that stories about the Điện Biên Phủ Victory and the sacrifices of earlier generations not only inspire pride among young people, but also motivate them to strive harder in their studies and personal growth. “We are constantly reminded that today’s peace is extremely precious, so we must cherish it and contribute to building an even better homeland,” Hà added.

Seventy-two years after the Điện Biên Phủ Victory, the urban landscape of Điện Biên has transformed remarkably.

On this land once marked by historic battles, every new rhythm of life today is being built upon the foundation of a glorious past. Wider roads, modern residential areas, and increasingly complete infrastructure projects are transforming Điện Biên into a more prosperous and vibrant province. Yet beyond these visible changes, what leaves the deepest impression is the transformation in people’s awareness and mindset. From officials and Party members to ordinary citizens, from students to veterans, everyone is joining hands to preserve historical memory as an inseparable part of present day life. History is not left behind, it continues to accompany, illuminate, and guide the present.

From a glorious past to a changing present, from silent sacrifices to today’s achievements, Điện Biên remains a vivid symbol of resilience and aspiration. And every May, amid the sound of mountain winds and the sight of brilliant red flags, this historic land seems once again infused with a renewed heartbeat - the heartbeat of memory, pride, and a journey toward the future. From that very source of history, Điện Biên is confidently writing new pages worthy of its stature as a heroic land.
