Điện Biên on high alert as wildfire risk soars

ĐBP - The Điện Biên Provincial Forest Protection Branch has issued a Level V wildfire warning - the highest risk level - for the entire province from February 17 to 23.

Due to prolonged dry conditions, the high-risk areas include Điện Biên Valley (Điện Biên District, Điện Biên Đông District, Điện Biên Phủ City), Tuần Giáo (Tuần Giáo, Tủa Chùa, and Mường Ảng Districts), and Mường Lay (Mường Nhé, Nậm Pồ, Mường Chà Districts, and Mường Lay Town). These areas are expected to remain at Level V wildfire risk throughout the week.

In response, the provincial forest protection force has instructed district ranger units, forestry teams, and forest owners to strictly comply with wildfire prevention and control measures under official Dispatch No.1356/CĐ-UBND, issued by the provincial People’s Committee on April 5, 2024.

Forest rangers in Tủa Chùa District patrol the forest with local residents.

Authorities will tighten controls on land clearing, slash-and-burn farming, and any activities that could ignite fires. They will also step up patrols and enforce strict penalties for fire-related violations under Decision No.22/2020/QĐ-UBND, issued on November 20, 2020.

Residents and local agencies are urged to monitor fire alerts on the Forest Protection Department’s official website (www.kiemlam.org.vn) for early detection and quick response. Additionally, local Fire Prevention and Control Committees and village firefighting teams must maintain 24/7 duty shifts and ensure all equipment and personnel are ready for immediate deployment in case of wildfire.

To prevent wildfires from spreading, authorities may establish checkpoints at forest entry points to limit access to high-risk areas.

The province will also implement the “four on-the-spots” principle (on-the-spot command, on-the-spot forces, on-the-spot equipment and supplies, on-the-spot logistics) to ensure a swift and effective wildfire response.

With extreme wildfire risk forecast, the provincial Forest Protection Branch urges authorities, local governments, and residents to cooperate in fire prevention efforts and safeguard the province’s forests and natural resources.
