Điện Biên discusses on potentials of buckwheat products with Japanese partners

ĐBP – Chairman of the Điện Biên Provincial People's Committee Lê Thành Đô urged Japanese partners to establish mechanisms and policies to support the production and marketing of buckwheat products in the province to harmonise the interests of the people and businesses in the sustainable development of this crop.

He made these remarks during a meeting on Tuesday (May 28) with a delegation from the Japan – Việt Nam Cuisine Association, led by the association’s president Matsuo Tomoyuki.

Chairman of the Điện Biên Provincial People's Committee Lê Thành Đô provided an overview of the potential and strengths of the province during the meeting.

During the meeting, Matsuo Tomoyuki introduced a short documentary on the development of buckwheat cultivation for soba noodles in some localities in Việt Nam, notably in Hà Giang Province.

He affirmed the value of buckwheat in the northwestern region, and said that there is a high demand in Japan for importing raw buckwheat from Việt Nam to make soba noodles.

He expressed his hope to exchange information with Điện Biên Province regarding the potential and strengths of buckwheat cultivation and other unique products. He also noted that the association aims to establish mechanisms for support and cooperation to implement its 110-product project.

The committee’s chairman, for his turn, provided an overview of the province's potential and strengths and the current situation of agricultural production in the province.

He particularly emphasised the potential for developing buckwheat cultivation in Điện Biên Province. Currently, buckwheat is only sparsely planted in some households for ornamental purposes and in certain tourist spots to attract visitors for sightseeing and photography. This type of crop is not yet used for food production.

Đô stressed the priority direction of developing areas for buckwheat cultivation for tourism development, aiming to mobilise local farmers to utilise post-harvest rice and corn fields for planting to create a production area.

Matsuo Tomoyuki, President of the Japan – Việt Nam Cuisine Association, speaks at the meeting.

The province’s leader proposed that the association provide specific directions regarding the value of buckwheat, the actual demand for raw materials associated with the scale of buckwheat cultivation development in Điện Biên Province as well as the benefits of local residents participating in the development of buckwheat production.

Following the meeting with provincial leaders, the association’s delegation conducted a survey on agricultural products in Nà Nhạn, Nà Tấu and Mường Phăng communes in Điện Biên Phủ City.
