Warehouse fire highlights safety risks in Điện Biên neighborhoods

ĐBP - The risk of fires and explosions at warehouses and production workshops remains a constant threat, underscoring the need for stronger prevention, inspections, and enforcement from authorities, as well as greater compliance from businesses and household operations.

On September 24, a major blaze broke out at the Việt Trang distribution center in group 6, Điện Biên Phủ ward (formerly Tân Thanh ward, Điện Biên province). With large amounts of flammable materials stored inside, including cartons, boxes, and plastic packaging, the fire spread rapidly, producing thick black smoke. Although firefighters quickly contained the flames, the incident caused significant property damage, disrupting business operations and affecting workers’ livelihoods. The cause is still under investigation.

The fire served as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by warehouses and workshops located in densely populated neighborhoods. These facilities often store combustible goods and operate with potential fire hazards, while fire prevention systems remain inadequate and compliance with safety regulations is inconsistent.

The risks are amplified by the layout of such facilities- large premises situated directly next to homes and other buildings, with narrow access roads and limited water sources. These conditions slow firefighting efforts, allowing flames to intensify and spread to nearby households, causing even greater losses.

Major Vũ Thế Ninh, from the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Division of Điện Biên province, noted: “While some facilities comply with fire safety rules, many owners still underestimate the importance of this work. Common violations include poor storage arrangements, flammable goods placed too close to heat sources, and blocked emergency exits. These lapses heighten fire risks and complicate response efforts.”

At the Tiến Toán Service and Trading Co., Ltd’s warehouse in Điện Biên Phủ ward, several safety shortcomings were found: exposed electrical wiring, sockets installed near stored goods, and piles of merchandise stacked against walls that obstruct escape routes. Though not yet critical, such issues could endanger fire safety if not addressed promptly.

Dương Thị Diên, an employee at Tiến Toán, said: “After receiving guidance from the fire police, I now understand the safety requirements much better. Anything missing, we add immediately. Anything arranged incorrectly, we fix right away to reduce the risk of fire.”

Currently, Điện Biên province has over 100 active warehouses and workshops, most of them interspersed within residential areas. Just a single electrical short circuit or careless use of fire could quickly ignite a blaze, endangering dozens of nearby households.

Production workshops carry even higher risks, as they typically use heavy machinery, high heat sources, and sometimes flammable chemicals. Without strict oversight, these facilities pose threats not only to business assets but also to surrounding communities.

Điện Máy Xanh warehouse (a major electronics retail chain in Vietnam) in Mường Thanh ward maintains safe spacing between storage racks to prevent fire spread.

Lieutenant Colonel Trần Thanh Bình, Deputy Head of the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Division, warned: “The fire and explosion risk at warehouses and workshops in residential areas remains very high. Authorities have strengthened inspections, issued guidance, and strictly penalized violations. But real safety requires proactive responsibility from businesses themselves, by complying with rules and investing in fire prevention systems.”

Beyond official inspections, businesses must take the lead: raising fire safety awareness, installing fire alarms and extinguishing systems, conducting regular training, ensuring clear escape routes, and maintaining safe distances between goods and electrical systems. These measures are not just legal requirements but vital safeguards, acting as a “firewall” to protect lives and property from disaster.
