Racing to complete new coffee and macadamia planting season

ĐBP - In implementing the provincial People’s Committee’s Plan No.1850/KH-UBND on new coffee and macadamia planting, localities across Điện Biên have launched simultaneous campaigns and accelerated planting operations since late June. The newly planted areas are now being urgently completed, with efforts focused on meeting the plan within the appropriate planting season and ensuring the targets are achieved.

In 2026, the family of Quàng Văn Tin in Pha Nàng hamlet, Tuần Giáo commune, registered to convert 1.5 hectares of upland fields to coffee cultivation. From mid-July, immediately after receiving seedlings, fertilizer and technical guidance from the local authorities, his family mobilized labor and promptly began planting. To date, the entire 1.5-hectare coffee area has been planted.

Quàng Văn Tin said: “After planting, my family regularly inspects and monitors the coffee plantation and follows the recommended care and protection procedures to achieve the highest possible survival rate. If any plants die, we will promptly replace them.”

Staff of the Tuần Giáo commune General Services Center instruct residents on techniques for establishing new coffee plantations.

To give farmers confidence in converting their crops, Tuần Giáo Commune, alongside providing seedlings and agricultural inputs, has established field teams that work directly with local communities, providing hands-on guidance from land preparation and basal fertilization to planting techniques and post-planting care.

This hands-on guidance helps farmers master the technical procedures, proactively care for their crops and promptly address areas where plants are growing poorly, thereby improving both plant survival rates and the quality of newly planted areas. Lò Thị Bon of the Tuần Giáo commune General Services Center said: “The Center has established teams to work directly in local areas, combining public outreach with guidance for farmers on planting techniques, post-planting care and the proper and effective use of fertilizers, thereby helping improve the quality of newly planted areas.”

Under Plan No.1850/KH-UBND of the provincial People’s Committee on the development of coffee and macadamia cultivation, Tuần Giáo commune was assigned a target of planting 140 hectares of new coffee and 140 hectares of new macadamia in 2026. From the beginning of the year, the commune People’s Committee directed specialized agencies to coordinate with hamlets and villages to review available land, conduct outreach and encourage residents to register for the program and prepare the necessary conditions for planting.

Mường Mùn commune officials instruct residents on coffee planting techniques.

From mid-July, when weather conditions became favorable, hamlets and villages simultaneously launched planting campaigns, transporting seedlings to upland fields and accelerating planting operations. By August 9, the commune had completed nearly 360 hectares of new coffee planting and 150 hectares of new macadamia planting, significantly exceeding its assigned targets. The locality is continuing to mobilize labor and equipment and take advantage of favorable weather to urgently complete the remaining areas, with the goal of completing the entire new planting plan in August.

Phạm Hữu Chiến, Vice Chairman of the Tuần Giáo commune People’s Committee, said: “To complete the plan on schedule, the commune is continuing to mobilize field teams to stay close to local areas, coordinate with hamlets and villages to review the remaining areas and urge residents to promptly plant the seedlings. Alongside accelerating the pace, we are paying particular attention to guiding farmers to follow the proper technical procedures, regularly inspect and care for the plants, and replace dead seedlings to ensure a high survival rate. This will enable us not only to fulfill the assigned targets but also to lay a foundation for the newly planted areas to grow well and generate economic benefits in the years ahead.”

Similarly, in Mường Mùn commune, new coffee and macadamia planting is also proceeding at a rapid pace. In recent days, the locality has focused on mobilizing labor, urging residents to take advantage of favorable weather and accelerate planting, with the goal of completing the planting season in August. This year, Mường Mùn commune was assigned targets of 400 hectares of new coffee and 400 hectares of new macadamia. With strong determination and strong support from local residents, the commune set an ambitious target from the beginning of the year to plant 1,142 hectares of new coffee, nearly three times the provincial target, and 424.41 hectares of macadamia, exceeding the assigned target.

To date, the commune has planted 1,027.87 hectares of coffee, equivalent to nearly 90% of its target, while macadamia planting has reached 297.09 hectares, or more than 74% of the target. The locality is continuing to mobilize personnel and concentrate efforts on completing the remaining areas.

Residents of Quài Tở commune receive seedlings for the 2026 new coffee planting season.

Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, Chairman of the Mường Mùn commune People’s Committee, said: “The commune has established teams responsible for monitoring individual areas, directly inspecting and urging planting progress and guiding residents in caring for coffee and macadamia after planting. The field teams regularly work at the grassroots level, promptly addressing difficulties and ensuring that the newly planted areas are completed on schedule and meet technical requirements. Our goal is to complete 100% of the 2026 new coffee and macadamia planting plan, thereby contributing to the achievement of the commune’s target for new coffee planting during the 2025-2030 term under the Resolution of the commune Party Congress.”

Plan No.1850/KH-UBND sets a target of planting 12,000 hectares of new coffee and macadamia across the province in 2026, including 5,930 hectares of coffee, 5,930 hectares of intercropped macadamia and 140 hectares of pure macadamia plantations. As of August 9, the province had completed nearly 11,213 hectares of new coffee planting, 5,525 hectares of intercropped macadamia and 149 hectares of pure macadamia planting.

Alongside completing the planned planting areas, the Department of Agriculture and Environment is coordinating with commune-level People’s Committees to inspect and review planted areas, promptly replace dead seedlings and provide proper care to ensure high survival rates and healthy growth. These efforts are laying the foundation for stable coffee and macadamia growing areas that can provide sustainable livelihoods and incomes for local residents.
