Promoting value of Điện Biên agricultural products

ĐBP - Shifting crop structures linked to value chain production, forming concentrated raw material areas, and intensifying trade promotion are opening new directions for Điện Biên agriculture. Many characteristic products - such as tea, coffee, and rice - are step-by-step affirming quality, elevating value, and enhancing market competitiveness.

Appearing since 2019 in Búng Lao and Mường Lạn communes, Phan Nhất organic tea from Phan Nhất Tea Co., Ltd. has gradually built a brand with a closed production process complying with organic production and food safety standards. Raw material areas are planned in a concentrated manner, applying organic farming methods and limiting chemical impacts to create a distinct quality and flavor for the product.

Phan Trọng Nhất, Director of Phan Nhất Tea Co., Ltd., noted that converting inefficient crop areas to develop organic tea zones helped the company form a stable raw material area, elevating product quality and economic value per unit of land. Producing under organic processes linked to processing, brand building, and OCOP product development also created conditions for Phan Nhất tea to access markets with high quality demands.

Currently, the Phan Nhất organic tea area spans 20 hectares, with 17 hectares yielding stable harvests. From this raw material area, the unit processes and develops 7 tea products, including 2 four-star OCOP recognized products. Products are not only consumed in the domestic market but also exported to South Korea, contributing to elevating the value and competitiveness of Điện Biên tea.

Continuing this direction, Phan Nhất Tea Co., Ltd. is the first unit in Điện Biên to intercrop 5,000 Sophora japonica trees within tea acreage. After nearly 3 years of care, the Sophora japonica garden began yielding harvests. From this raw material source, the company plans to develop Sophora japonica tea and young bud Sophora japonica products under the Phan Nhất brand, thereby diversifying products, raising medicinal plant value, and opening additional development directions for raw material areas.

After 3 years planted on Mường Lạn soil, Sophora japonica trees owned by Phan Nhất Tea Co., Ltd. yield harvests.

With favorable climate and soil advantages, in recent years, coffee and macadamia have been oriented by Điện Biên to develop into key agricultural products. This orientation was materialized in Resolution No.11-NQ/TU dated December 31, 2025, of the Executive Board of the provincial Party Committee on agricultural restructuring toward concentrated, green, smart, and sustainable commodity production for 2026-2030 with orientations toward 2035.

Alongside expanding raw material areas, the province emphasizes organizing concentrated production, connecting residents, cooperatives, and enterprises to step-by-step form closed value chains that elevate product quality and value, featuring the synergy of “6 stakeholders”: State, farmers, scientists, enterprises, banks, and distributors.

Materializing Resolution 11, on March 16, 2026, the provincial People’s Committee issued Plan No.1850/KH-UBND on planting new coffee and macadamia trees and piloting the low-altitude economic space development model in 2026 across Điện Biên province, setting a target to develop 12,000 hectares of coffee and macadamia. Through creative propaganda and mobilization methods, the movement to develop coffee and macadamia raw material areas spread rapidly statewide. Alongside expanding raw material areas, Điện Biên is becoming an attractive destination for enterprises and investors in coffee processing, with many businesses conducting field surveys and researching locations to invest in processing plants, step-by-step forming value chains and elevating coffee bean value right at the locality.

Lù Văn Cường, Deputy Head of the Economic Office of Mường Ảng commune, stated that the commune recently welcomed 3 survey delegations for coffee processing plant construction, in which Detech Coffee JSC is scheduled to commence construction on the Detech Coffee Processing Plant in Na Luông village across an area of roughly 12 hectares in October 2026.

Beside developing raw material areas, Điện Biên actively promoted trade and advertised local specialty products to domestic and international consumers over recent times. Through agricultural trade fairs, investment and trade promotion conferences, and supply-demand connection programs, many provincial specialties - such as Séng Cù rice, Mường Phăng upland sticky rice, Mường Ảng coffee, smoked dried buffalo meat, and wild pepper seeds - were introduced, promoted, and signed for consumption contracts with domestic partners, with numerous provincial OCOP products entering supermarket systems like WinMart, Big C, and T-Mart.

Emphasizing digital transformation applications in agricultural consumption, to date, many Điện Biên specialties - such as rice, Mường Ảng coffee, Phan Nhất tea, Hồng Phước arrowroot vermicelli, Chung Phước smoked dried buffalo meat, and red brown rice noodles and instant brown rice pho produced by the Điện Biên Agricultural Products Processing, Business, and Production Cooperative - have been brought onto e-commerce floors and sales channels like Shopee, Facebook, and TikTok. This serves as an important shift helping residents access modern consumption methods, reduce dependence on traders, limit bumper-crop price drop situations, and expand consumption markets nationwide.
