Tủa Chùa strives to eliminate temporary housing for poor families

ĐBP - In its efforts to eliminate temporary and dilapidated housing for poor and near-poor families, Tủa Chùa district, Điện Biên province has actively mobilized various resources over recent years to support the construction of homes for families facing difficult circumstances.

As a result, many spacious new homes have been built, enabling poor and near-poor households in the area to “settle down and establish their livelihoods,” working toward escaping poverty.

After years of anticipation, by the end of 2024, the family of Mr. Lò Văn Toàn from Huổi Lực village, Tủa Chùa town, moved into their new home. Mr. Toàn shared: “My family has been poor for many years. I am unwell and too weak to work, and my wife and children rely solely on farming, so our income is low. Our old stilt house was falling apart - infested with termites, leaning, and leaking - but we could not afford repairs. Given our hardships, the district connected us with a sponsor who provided VND 50 million to build a new house. After nearly two months of construction, our new stilt house, spanning about 80sq.m, was completed. My family is overjoyed. This support is incredibly meaningful, giving poor households like ours the security to stabilize our lives and strive to overcome poverty.”

Mr. Toàn’s story is just one of hundreds of poor households in Tủa Chùa district that have received assistance to eliminate temporary and dilapidated housing in recent years. Ms. Vi Thu Hằng, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Tủa Chùa district, explained: “To implement the program to eradicate temporary and dilapidated housing for poor households, the district has actively rallied resources. Over the past two years (2023-2024), we have supported 430 poor households in building homes through the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction. Of these, 325 households received funding for new construction, while 105 were assisted with repairs. The support amounts to VND 50 million per household for new homes and VND 30 million per household for repairs. Remarkably, from funds raised through the “For the poor” Fund and contributions from organizations, agencies, and units, the district has facilitated the construction of over 800 “Homes of Affection, Social Security,” great solidarity houses, and houses of gratitude since 2022, benefiting policy families, poor, and near-poor households across the district.”

A recent survey revealed that 490 poor and near-poor households in Tủa Chùa district still live in temporary or dilapidated housing and need support. This includes 325 households requiring new homes and 165 needing repairs. Of these, 78 households have been approved for housing assistance under the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction, with implementation slated for 2025.

For the remaining households, the district plans to propose their inclusion in future support lists while continuing to appeal to agencies, businesses, organizations, and compassionate individuals both within and outside the province to contribute to the “For the poor” Fund. These funds will support the construction of solidarity houses. Additionally, the district will enhance partnerships with sponsors to mobilize resources, aiming to eliminate temporary and dilapidated housing for poor and near-poor households.

This initiative not only ensures social welfare in the area but also helps poor families “settle down and establish their livelihoods,” providing them with the stability to focus on production and poverty reduction.
