In today’s fast-paced modern life, it’s easy for people to get swept away by work, technology, and social relationships, unintentionally neglecting their own homes. A quiet dinner, a missed inquiry, or an unspoken hug - over time, the bonds of affection can loosen. Yet, many families still silently nurture happiness in their own way, with sincere love, understanding, and quiet sacrifice.

In the mountainous area of Điện Biên Đông, the family of Cứ A Pó in Phình Giàng commune is a testament to the enduring strength of family bonds through hardships. Having been together for nearly 40 years, Pó and his wife have never raised their voices at each other. There were times when they had many children and struggled to make ends meet, with Pó working in the fields and his wife carrying firewood and weaving baskets to provide for their children’s education.
“No matter how difficult it was, we never blamed each other. Family is about sharing the burden!” he shared, his weathered hand gripping his wife’s as if holding the most precious thing in life.
Their three children are now independent, with one working as a local official and others as workers in the lowlands. Whenever they return home, they are moved to tears by the realization that “though our parents didn’t give us wealth, they taught us how to live honorably and love one another.”

Happiness in each family doesn’t come from grand gestures, but is woven from simple threads: a timely question, a shared glance when tired, a laugh in the midst of a storm. Though no home is perfect, what matters is how the members of the family strive to improve themselves in order to preserve the shared happiness. There are families that have nearly fallen apart due to misunderstandings, financial pressure, and lifestyle differences. But through listening, forgiving, and changing, they have weathered the storms and found peace.
The development of modern society presents many challenges for families. Children are exposed to social media at an early age, and adults often get caught up in technology, leading to less direct interaction with their loved ones at home. Family dinners become sparse, and silence replaces laughter. Divorce is no longer rare, and many couples separate because they cannot bear the pressure of living up to the “perfect family” expectations. In many families, domestic violence still exists, with women and children bearing the brunt of the suffering. Therefore, preserving and nurturing the home cannot rely solely on each family; it requires the involvement of the community, government, and social organizations.

In recent years, Điện Biên has implemented many practical programs to support families in overcoming difficulties and building prosperous, happy lives. Models like “Families Without Violence,” “Safe Homes,” and “Parents Learning Together” have contributed to spreading cultural behavior, parenting skills, and conflict resolution in families. Workshops, campaigns, and family knowledge competitions have been held widely, even reaching remote villages. More importantly, countless people quietly preserve the values and morals of their homes to pass on to future generations.
The first Family Pickleball Tournament in Điện Biên, organized in celebration of Vietnam Family Day on June 28, carries a profound meaning by strengthening relationships and affection between family members through sports. It is not just a sports activity but also a message promoting a healthy lifestyle, encouraging closer connections across generations within families, and helping to build a compassionate and sustainable community.

The Vietnam Family Day is not only a moment to honor the role of families in society but also a time for each person to pause and ask, “Have I given enough attention to my loved ones?” The answer may lie in simple actions, such as: Did you have dinner with your parents yesterday? When was the last time you hugged your child and told them you love them? Did you hold your partner’s hand when both of you were tired? These simple actions are the threads that hold happiness together in each family.
A small home, if nurtured with love and responsibility, becomes a solid foundation for fostering character and contributes to building a better society. Only when each family is truly peaceful can the country develop sustainably and happily. Each person, whether a father, mother, child, or any family member, is a link in that home. Let us learn to love more, slow down to listen, be strong to overcome together, and be forgiving to preserve our happiness.
In this vast world, family remains the place to return to. It may not be perfect, but it is always filled with love. And when the small lights in each home are lit together, we will have a country filled with great happiness.
