Running movement: A fresh breeze in the rhythm of life in Điện Biên

ĐBP - Quiet yet steadily growing, the running movement in Điện Biên province is making its mark in people’s lives as a new rhythm - healthy, active, and full of inspiration. From central streets to the peaceful paths along the rice fields of Mường Thanh, runners in sportswear with resilient strides and passionate eyes can now be seen everywhere.

One afternoon at the Võ Thị Sáu Park - the green heart of Mường Thanh ward - the vibrant atmosphere created by running enthusiasts is unmistakable. Dozens of people of all ages take steady steps. Some young runners burst into sprints, while older ones move gently, counting each stride… With its open space, clean air, and minimal traffic, this park becomes lively each evening with runners in training.

No longer a solitary practice, running in Điện Biên has truly become a movement. Regardless of age, profession, or background, they’re bound together by one belief: each step taken is a step toward a healthier, more positive life. Phạm Đức Tuyến, a longtime member of the Điện Biên Runners community from Điện Biên Phủ ward, who has been committed to running for over five years, shared: “Running is one of the most accessible sports. All you need is a well-fitting pair of shoes and comfortable clothes - you can start anytime, anywhere. No need for fields or expensive equipment; it’s truly for everyone.”

Another great advantage is flexibility. Amid the busyness of life and work, runners can freely arrange their training schedules - whether early morning or late afternoon. This adaptability helps sustain long-term passion. But most importantly, running brings remarkable improvements to both physical and mental health.

A typical run by Phạm Đức Tuyến is about 5km.

Tuyến excitedly said: “Since I started running regularly, my health has significantly improved. I rarely get sick, and when I do, I recover faster. Many people see impressive improvements in key health metrics like blood sugar, blood fat, and liver fat. One senior member of our group, who works at the Thanh Hải General Clinic, has shown incredible health gains thanks to daily running.”

In truth, the running movement in Điện Biên has been quietly growing for years through spontaneous efforts. From retirees, young people wanting to lose weight, to office workers aiming to get fit - everyone has their own reason, yet they all share persistence on the track. Over the past 2-3 years, with the national surge in sports promoting “breaking personal limits,” running in Điện Biên has entered a new phase. Running groups are now more organized, with structured training schedules and plans to join races within and outside the province.

Runners’ routes are recorded with specialized devices.

For example, the Điện Biên Runners, led by Tuyến and considered the core of the movement, has hundreds of members, with 30-40 participating regularly. Though still young compared to other localities, the passion and connection within the Điện Biên running community is growing stronger each day.

One major driver of this development is the boom in nationwide running events. In 2024 alone, Điện Biên hosted two large-scale races attracting thousands of local and international athletes: Điện Biên Phủ Marathon 2024 - To the Land of Fortresses in Bloom and THACO Marathon for Traffic Safety - Điện Biên Phủ 2024.

For those who have truly embraced the sport, daily training is no longer just about staying fit. They pursue a greater goal: conquering races. It’s a desire to surpass personal limits, improve performance across distances, and experience personal breakthroughs.

“We call the period from September to year’s end ‘race season’,” Tuyến added. “The weather is cool, the running routes are beautiful, and everyone’s excited to register. Beginners can opt for 5km or 10km, while more seasoned runners challenge themselves with 21km or even full marathon (42km). It’s not about medals - it’s about surpassing yourself, getting certificates, photos, and unforgettable experiences. Around 15 of our members are actively training for an upcoming race in Lai Châu…”

Race participation helps runners feel their personal breakthroughs.

Clearly, running isn’t just a sport - it’s a lifestyle choice: healthy and positive. Though it seems simple, running brings countless benefits: improving cardiovascular health, increasing endurance, relieving stress, enhancing sleep quality, and especially fostering optimism and positive energy. With low cost, easy access, and minimal equipment required, running suits all ages and situations - from students to professionals to the elderly.

In Điện Biên, though still a fledgling movement compared to other regions, positive signs are emerging. From solitary jogs to structured group workouts, from running for health to the desire to conquer long distances - all reflect a growing sports spirit. With its current momentum, along with community interest and support from organizations and local units, the running movement in Điện Biên is sure to thrive even more in the time to come.
