Proactively responding to minimize flood damage

ĐBP - In recent years, with the impact of climate change, unpredictable and extreme rainfall and floods have caused significant damage to both lives and property. Proactively preventing, responding to, and preparing for these events early not only ensures a proactive approach but also reduces risks and minimizes damage.

Every year, the rainy season is a constant concern for local authorities and residents. In the 2025 flood season, many areas were affected, with varying levels of damage. Immediately after the floods, the local government and authorities focused on responding, assisting recovery, and minimizing damage.

Residents of Pú Nhung live on the slope with houses at risk of landslides.

Pú Nhung, formed by the merger of three communes, Pú Nhung, Rạng Đông, and Ta Ma, is a highland area with roads running along mountain slopes and villages often situated in low-lying areas surrounded by rocky hills. Every rainy season brings the threat of landslides, flash floods, and other hazards.

To mitigate damage, the local authorities in Pú Nhung actively monitor the situation, create response plans, and prepare for possible disasters. Nguyễn Văn Bách, Chairman of Pú Nhung commune People’s Committee, shared that the commune has proactively implemented preventive measures, including communicating with residents, evacuating homes in high-risk areas, and providing support for relocation. In total, 7 households in areas with talus landslides have been assisted in moving to safer locations.

Authorities assist Háng Chua village residents in moving to safer areas.

One example is the family of Vàng A Lồng from Háng Chua village in Pú Nhung. Their house, built from wood, was located in a high-risk area where, after a heavy rainstorm on the night of July 31st and August 1st, the foundation started to erode and crack. Despite being reluctant to move due to the difficulty and cost of relocation, the family received support from local authorities and neighbors to rebuild their house in a safer area.

Pú Nhung’s authorities mobilize local businesses to help with relocation and site preparation.

Quài Tở commune, another area hit hard by floods, has also focused on disaster response and coordination. Two households were relocated after heavy rains, but the damage to infrastructure, particularly roads, affected both transport and local production.

Nhữ Duy Đông, Chairman of the Quài Tở commune People’s Committee, mentioned that in addition to raising awareness, local authorities worked closely with village leaders and residents to monitor situations and address potential hazards. Collaborative efforts to clear landslides and cut down trees threatening roads ensured the safety of residents and vehicles.

The Quài Tở’s Civil Defense Command helps relocate households after flood damage.

These proactive measures, early warning systems, and community efforts are crucial in minimizing the damage caused by natural disasters. In the context of unpredictable weather and natural disasters, staying alert and prepared is key to protecting both lives and property.
