Mr. Nguyễn Thanh Lâm, Vice Chairman of the Na Son commune People’s Committee, and Deputy Head of the Disaster Prevention and Control Board of the commune, said: “The heavy rains and floods have severely impacted the lives of the local people. The villages are often located on mountainsides, in valleys near streams, so the risk of landslides and flash floods is ever-present. Currently, the Disaster Prevention and Control Board has been coordinating with other units and residents to assess the situation on the ground and urgently relocate people and assets from more than 100 households at risk of landslides to safer areas. We have also established a team of 21 members to review and evaluate the flood damage in villages and residential areas, to come up with an appropriate plan and response in light of the unpredictable nature of the weather.”

Not only in Na Son but also in the old Điện Biên Đông district, the 2025 floods have caused severe damage. Despite being proactive and increasing vigilance to prevent losses in life and property, the constant anxiety of local people persists during every heavy rain at night.

Not only in the highland villages, but even in the center of Na Son commune, neighborhoods like groups 3, 4, and 5, have many households affected by the floods, including flooding, foundation settlement, and landslides. Among these, group 5 was hit hardest, with 160 households affected, of which 110 households were impacted by erosion from both the hillside and the stream bank.

Ms. Bùi Thị Loan, from Residential Group No.5 in Na Son, shared: “My house is on a slope right at the source of the stream, and luckily it is at the top of the slope. On the night of August 1, when the heavy rains caused flooding and fast-moving water, we had to evacuate. Over a week has passed, but my family of five is still staying at the commune guest house and we are too scared to return home at night, especially on rainy days.”
While the rain has lessened recently, the anxiety among local people has not decreased. For households at risk of landslides or flooding, families with elderly or young children typically opt to temporarily relocate to safer areas.

Mr. Nguyễn Quốc Tiên, Head of Residential Group No.5, held: “After the flood, the Disaster Prevention and Control Board of Na Son commune has guided people to actively monitor the weather. If there is heavy rain or a risk of flooding or landslides, announcements are made via the loudspeaker system, Zalo, or by visiting each household to facilitate temporary evacuation. The evacuation areas are the guest house, official residences, and the cultural house. Currently, Residential Group No.5 has 6 families with young children and elderly members who have chosen to stay in the evacuation area; other households will move to safer areas in case of heavy rain.”
