“Living blood banks” at Điện Biên provincial General Hospital

ĐBP - With the motto “Each drop of blood saves a life,” medical staff at the Điện Biên provincial General Hospital have become true “living blood banks,” regularly stepping up to donate blood and help patients in critical condition pull through life-threatening emergencies.

Dr. Trần Thị Lịch, Director of the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center at the hospital, shared that from the beginning of each year, the hospital develops a plan and compiles a list of medical personnel who volunteer to donate blood. These doctors and nurses not only actively participate in voluntary blood donation campaigns but are also ready to give direct blood transfusions in urgent cases where patients need immediate support. Having witnessed many life-or-death situations, the hospital staff share the same conviction to always be prepared to donate blood whenever needed.

In addition, the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center maintains a database of people in the province with rare RH-negative blood types, ensuring timely emergency responses when such blood is required.

Among the hospital staff who frequently encounter patients in dire need of blood, Trần Thị Trang Mỹ Linh from the Laboratory Department is no stranger to emergency transfusions. Understanding how timely blood can make the difference between life and death, she never hesitates to donate when she's eligible. Linh has donated blood more than 10 times, including two direct donations to patients in emergency situations. She recalled one case where a pregnant woman, after undergoing a hysterectomy due to an ectopic pregnancy, was at risk of dying from severe blood loss. With none of her relatives qualified to donate, Linh rushed to the hospital and provided the crucial transfusion just in time to save the woman’s life.

Trần Thị Trang Mỹ Linh participates in a voluntary blood donation.

“Every time I donate blood, I feel more optimistic and fulfilled,” said Linh. “Knowing that my blood can help someone survive means a lot to me. I have twice donated directly to patients in critical condition, and hearing that they recovered fills me with immense joy.”

Hà Thị Khanh, also from the Laboratory Department, cannot even recall how many times she has donated blood. “It’s something I do without hesitation,” she said. “Donating blood does not harm your health. In fact, it can even boost your immunity. Sharing your blood to save a life is both rewarding and sacred.”

Whenever there is an urgent call from the hospital, staff members with matching blood types are quick to respond. Many also encourage their friends and family to join in, helping meet the constant need for blood in emergencies and treatment.

These voluntary “living blood banks” expect no recognition or reward. Their only wish is to save lives. Each drop they give is a beacon of hope to someone in need, an embodiment of the deeply rooted Vietnamese spirit of compassion: “Love others as you love yourself.”
