Joy in great unity houses

ĐBP - The rainy season has arrived. In the highland and border villages of Điện Biên province, sturdy Great Unity Houses are being built as a result of a deeply humane policy from the Party and State, drawing support from the “For the Poor” Fund alongside joint contributions from organizations, enterprises, and benefactors inside and outside the province. Each house stands as a symbol of human warmth and community solidarity, providing underprivileged families with fresh motivation to rise in life.

The policy supporting the construction of Great Unity Houses carries deep material and spiritual significance, demonstrating profound care from the Party and State for poor and vulnerable people while affirming the spirit of “leaving no one behind.” To bring this policy into daily life, beyond resources from the “For the Poor” Fund, there is continuous backing from agencies, units, enterprises, sister localities, and compassionate hearts nationwide. This joint effort has turned simple dreams of solid homes for many families into reality.

Lò Văn Uôn from Huổi Cánh village, Thanh An commune, feels joyful in his house built through joint community support.

Following review and verification of individual household circumstances, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Thanh An commune proactively coordinated with press agencies, including Dân trí Newspaper, to introduce exceptionally difficult cases needing community assistance, receiving immense attention from readers across the country. These generous hearts contributed to offering underprivileged families the opportunity to erect new homes.

On the day of receiving his Great Unity House, 83-year-old veteran Lò Văn Uôn from Huổi Cánh village, Thanh An commune, could not hide his emotional tears. For many years, Uôn lived alone in a severely degraded house, constantly worrying each rainy season over leaking roofs and decaying walls. His greatest wish in the twilight of his life was having a safe residence to enjoy old age peacefully. That humble desire has now come true. Thanks to support from readers of Dân trí Newspaper alongside benefactors, a spacious, sturdy new house was completed. Inside his Great Unity House, Uôn feels the community’s care for those in difficult circumstances even more clearly.

Also in Huổi Cánh village, Cà Văn Đanh’s family was among the households receiving support to build a Great Unity House. Advanced in age, frail, frequently ill, and facing financial hardship, he had lacked the conditions to repair his old house for years. From the “For the Poor” Fund, Đanh’s family received VND 50 million in support, which was combined with contributions from relatives and family resources to erect a stilted house valued at over VND 200 million. After nearly two months of construction, the house is nearing completion amidst the eager anticipation of his entire family.

According to Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Thanh An commune Vì Văn Sơn, reviews indicated over 100 households in the commune required housing support. To date, 8 households have received house construction support from all-level “For the Poor” Funds and mobilization through Dân trí Newspaper totaling VND 445 million, with remaining expenses jointly contributed by families, relatives, and the community.

Vì Văn Sơn shared: “The most valuable aspect is not merely the money supported, but the sharing spirit of the entire community. When many hearts turn toward the poor, seemingly impossible things become reality.”

Originating from a sound policy, the campaign to build Great Unity Houses has spread deeply and widely, serving as a pillar for hundreds of struggling families across Điện Biên province. Every completed house embodies the joint strength of numerous individuals, organizations, and the whole of society.

Since the beginning of the year, the provincial Campaign Steering Committee for the “For the Poor” Fund has supported the construction of 162 Great Unity Houses for poor and near-poor households across 38 communes and wards in the province. These include 50 brick houses, 56 traditional wooden houses for Hmông ethnic people, 15 stilted houses, and 43 iron-frame houses. Priority targets include households with social protection beneficiaries, people with severe illnesses, solitary individuals, elderly people, and families facing natural disaster risks.

Local authorities hand over Great Unity House support to Chảo Cà Toan’s family in Huổi Lụ 2 village, Nậm Kè commune.

Total execution capital for the program exceeded VND 20 billion, with the “For the Poor” Fund alone contributing VND 8 billion sourced from sister localities, enterprises, banks, and intra-provincial mobilization. During construction, armed forces units and local residents contributed over 1,000 labor days to transport materials, dismantle old structures, and erect new homes.

In Nậm Kè commune, using funds allocated by the provincial Campaign Steering Committee for the “For the Poor” Fund, the locality urgently executed support to build four Great Unity Houses valued at a total of VND 200 million. In his newly completed 40 m² house, Chảo Cà Toan from Huổi Lụ 2 village could not hide his joy. Previously, whenever working far away, his greatest worry was his wife and child staying in their degraded house, particularly during storm seasons.

Chảo Cà Toan shared: “Now that we have a new house, I feel much more at ease. Without the constant worry whenever heavy rain and strong winds hit, I have extra motivation to focus on labor and expanding our family economy.”

Sharing in that joy are the families of Lùng Thị Chanh (Nậm Kè village), Sùng A Hải (Huổi Pết village), and Hảng A Vàng (Huổi Thanh 2 village). The new houses offer not only safe shelter but also instill renewed faith for families to work peacefully and step-by-step stabilize their lives.

In late June, the families of Vàng Thị Só (Nậm Pang village) and Lầu Thị Chả (Hô Tâu village, Chà Tở commune) were also handed Great Unity Houses. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Chà Tở Commune Party Committee Lầu Thị Liên expressed her wish that these new homes serve as motivation for families to focus on production, gradually escape poverty, and achieve long-term stability.

Looking at the radiant smiles of families on the day they receive new houses, one can clearly sense the great meaning of the program. A solid home helps residents settle down while bringing peace, faith, and hope for a better future. Each completed house means another family freed from temporary living, an elderly person finding shelter, young children growing up under a safe roof, and faith nurtured through community sharing. When a sound policy meets social solidarity, good things continue to multiply, turning today’s joy under Great Unity Houses into a driving force for poor and vulnerable households to work with confidence, expand their economies, and sustainably overcome poverty.
