Independence Day in heroic land

ĐBP - There are lands where, with every autumn’s arrival, historical memories feel closer to the present. Điện Biên is one such place.

In this land that once marked arduous years of struggle and the Điện Biên Phủ Victory that “resounded across five continents and shook the globe,” the Independence Day is felt not only through the crimson flags of the Fatherland and vibrant cultural and sports activities, but also in the simple joy of diverse ethnic groups living, working, and building their homeland in peace.

For the ethnic groups of Điện Biên province, Independence Day is an occasion to set aside daily labor, put on their finest traditional attire, and join family and friends traveling to provincial and communal centers to celebrate. In previous years, highland residents often traveled tens or even hundreds of kilometers to attend festivities. Today, numerous localities organize celebrations right in commune centers and villages, bringing the festive spirit closer to the people.

In Tìa Ló village, Pu Nhi commune, the launch ceremony of the Tù Lu - Tìa Ló Community Tourism Village takes place on September 1-2, tied to activities celebrating the 81st anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2, creating an entertainment, exchange, and cultural experience space right in the highlands.

Đinh Quang Bạo, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Pu Nhi commune, stated that organizing activities locally generates a joyous atmosphere for the people during Independence Day, while preserving and promoting ethnic cultural identities, showcasing the homeland’s image, and driving community tourism. Through cultural performances, sports, and authentic local experiences, residents gain opportunities to connect with the community and introduce local traditional beauty to visitors from near and far.

Beyond Pu Nhi, localities across the province are actively preparing distinct cultural, sports, and tourism programs to serve residents and tourists during the National Day holiday. From the Mường Thanh basin to border villages, the Independence Day atmosphere is spreading. Xòe dance rhythms, khèn melodies, festive drumbeats, and the brilliant colors of traditional garments compose a vibrant autumn picture across Điện Biên.

In the two central wards of the province (Mường Thanh and Điện Biên Phủ), activities commemorating the 81st anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2 are taking place energetically, fostering excitement across all walks of life. Streets and residential quarters are cleaned and decorated, national flags are hung solemnly, and varied cultural and sports events are organized, making the urban landscape more vibrant. In residential areas, people actively clean streets, enhance landscapes, and decorate community spaces. The red flags with yellow stars fluttering along roads evoke the sacred significance of National Day and the path of struggle for independence forged by past generations.

Điện Biên is transforming day by day.

Nguyễn Văn Thanh from Mường Thanh ward shared: “Everywhere you go these days, you see national flags; the streets are beautifully decorated, and everyone eagerly awaits National Day. For us, this is not just a holiday, but a moment to remember history, cherish the value of independence and freedom, and foster unity within the community.”

The Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has finalized activities for the September 2 National Day holiday. On August 30, the province responded to the “Advancing with Vietnam” walking program in 2026. The highlight of this year’s National Day celebrations is Folk Dance Festival 2026, offering attractive events such as cultural exchange galas, street Carnaval parades and performances, trade, tourism, culinary, and OCOP promotion spaces, community cultural activities, art exhibitions, and hot-air balloon displays.

Independence Day in Điện Biên carries a distinct quality. For local residents, celebrating Independence Day on a former fierce battlefield brings profound emotions. Amid vibrant flags and flowers, many visit Hill A1; A1, Him Lam, Độc Lập, and Tông Khao Martyrs’ Cemeteries; Mường Thanh Bridge, De Castries’ bunker, or the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Headquarters. These sites serve as reminders that today’s independence was bought with the blood and sacrifice of generations. Điện Biên possesses a rich historical relic system, headlined by the Điện Biên Phủ Battlefield Special National Relic.

From highland villages to the Điện Biên basin, from historical sites to flower-lined squares, Independence Day represents a harmonious blend of memory and the present. People enjoy festivities, children wear new clothes, folk dances and games continue, and visitors tour relics to understand a glorious chapter of national history. Building on the memory of a nation that fought to win and safeguard independence, present generations are working to make life on this land better. Every opened road, electrified village, preserved cultural tradition, and improved livelihood serves as a practical way to continue the story of independence.

With every autumn, as red flags with yellow stars flutter across roads, villages, and historical relics, Independence Day reminds Điện Biên residents of their heritage and their duty to preserve the achievements of their forebears, value peace, and join hands to build a prosperous and civilized homeland. On a land that forged a golden history, the spirit of independence is carried forward through the drive for development and faith in the future.

Some grow up in deprivation; some cannot take their father’s surname, leaving the father’s information blank on birth certificates; and some lose the opportunity to draw their first breath before ever being born. These “voids” illustrate that the repercussions of child marriage do not stop at a single marriage, but extend across future generations, impacting population quality, poverty reduction efforts, and social development.
