“Flag bearers” in voluntary blood donation movement in Điện Biên

ĐBP - In recent years, the voluntary blood donation (VBD) movement in Điện Biên province has made significant progress, playing an important role in public health care efforts.

In many localities and units, the VBD movement has been actively promoted, becoming a beautiful cultural practice and achieving remarkable results in the province's blood donation efforts.

Every year, whenever the EVN Red Week program is organized, the staff and workers of the Điện Biên Power Company enthusiastically participate. When donating blood, everyone at the company understands the meaningfulness of the act, contributing to saving patients in need of blood. The company has many exemplary figures in voluntary blood donation, such as Nguyễn Văn Tùng, the deputy head of the company’s Safety Division, who has donated blood over 20 times, and Phan Trung Dũng, a specialist at the Safety Division, who has donated blood 19 times.

With a spirit of sharing for the community, in addition to their professional work, the company regularly launches social welfare and VBD activities to all staff, workers, and employees. Along with the EVN Red Week, the staff and workers of the company actively participate in blood donation events such as the Spring Blood Festival, the VBD Day in response to the “Red Blood Drops” campaign in summer, and the “Red Journey” program... Each year, the staff and workers of the company donate more than 100 units of blood, contributing to addressing blood shortages and ensuring health care for the people.

Phan Ngọc Khánh, Deputy Director of the Điện Biên Power Company, shared that the company annually launches the VBD program, attracting a large number of staff, workers, and employees to participate. With positive participation, the amount of blood collected in recent years always exceeds the set target. In 2023, the company was honored to be one of five organizations awarded a certificate of merit by the Vietnam Red Cross for its voluntary blood donation efforts.

The Điện Biên Pedagogical College organizes two VBD campaigns annually. Thanks to the creative and diverse methods of propaganda and mobilization, the VBD activities always receive enthusiastic support and participation from teachers and students. The number of blood units donated has consistently met and exceeded the planned targets.

In early March 2025, the first VBD campaign of the year was organized by the Điện Biên Pedagogical College. In the vibrant atmosphere of the program, we had the opportunity to talk with Phạm Thu Minh, a third-year student majoring in Early Childhood Education. Minh shared: “This is the fifth time I have participated in the VBD campaign. I believe that the youth need to work together, raising their role and responsibility to contribute to the community in blood donation to save lives. Because every drop of blood donated can save a life, and these blood donations will help patients receive timely treatment.”

Along with many volunteer faces from previous years, this year's VBD program also attracted many first-year students. After one day of operation, the program collected 116 blood units, exceeding the set target.

Trần Thành Bắc, Secretary of the Youth Union of the Điện Biên Pedagogical College, stated that every year, the school launches and organizes several VBD campaigns for students. The attention from the school leaders and the enthusiastic response from teachers and students have contributed to promoting the VBD movement. The Youth Union has widely disseminated information about the noble purpose of blood donation, and students have actively participated.

As one of the leading units in the VBD movement, Mường Nhé district has consistently achieved 140% - 180% of the assigned blood donation target each year. To achieve this result, the district has mobilized party members, officials, and the people to engage in well-organized propaganda and mobilization efforts, setting an example of multiple blood donors. This has helped raise awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation and fostered the movement.

To make the VBD movement a regular and effective activity, the Mường Nhé District Blood Donation Mobilization Committee has strengthened and consolidated a network of enthusiastic and energetic volunteers in communication and mobilization efforts, encouraging the people to voluntarily participate in blood donation. The committee has also coordinated with related agencies and units, especially the medical staff at the Blood Transfusion Center (Provincial General Hospital) and the district health centers, to ensure the swift and safe collection of blood. As a result, the VBD movement has spread across the district and become a regular practice for officials, party members, and the people. Each year, Mường Nhé organizes one VBD campaign in November, attracting around 250 - 400 participants and collecting 200 - 300 blood units.

Sầm Văn Nưỡng, Vice Chairman of the Mường Nhé District Red Cross, held that thanks to effective propaganda and mobilization and an emphasis on renewing blood donation methods, the number of people registering and participating in VBD campaigns, as well as those donating blood on an ad hoc basis in the district, has increased year by year. In 2023, the district mobilized over 280 people to register for VBD, collecting 226.4 blood units, achieving 147% of the target. In 2024, more than 320 people registered, collecting 281.4 blood units, achieving 183% of the target.

Building on the achieved results, the Blood Donation Mobilization Committee in Mường Nhé district will continue its effective communication and mobilization efforts, raising the awareness and responsibility of officials, party members, and the public about VBD. The committee will also recognize and honor units, collectives, families, and individuals who have made significant contributions to the VBD movement. Additionally, they will focus on coordinating the organization of blood donation campaigns to ensure safety and implement policies for blood donors and those who mobilize others to donate blood.
