Equipping students with skills during summer vacation

ĐBP - Summer vacation is a time for students to temporarily put aside their books after a school year, while opening up opportunities for them to discover themselves through many beneficial activities.

From art talent classes to swimming courses and drowning prevention skills, an increasing number of parents are interested in creating conditions for their children to study and practice during the summer. Through this, children can develop physically, cultivate their talents, enhance life skills, and accumulate necessary life toolkits.

Regularly for the past week, lively music has been echoing from the practice room of the Điện Biên provincial Youth Activity Center. Among dozens of children intently practicing dance moves, Đỗ Hoàng Bảo Anh, a student in the modern dance class, is always passionately training. The energetic and decisive dance steps are executed by the young student with immense concentration and special fondness.

“I like sports dancing the most because it helps improve my health and physical strength. I love the jive steps because they make my legs stronger and help me stand firmer. I want to study here for a long time,” shared Đỗ Hoàng Bảo Anh.

The joy of Đỗ Hoàng Bảo Anh is also the common sentiment among many students during their summer break. After a school year with a dense schedule, they have more time to explore hobbies, develop talents, and learn new skills. Capturing this demand, the provincial Youth Activity Center has organized a wide range of classes, creating an environment for children and youths to practice and comprehensively develop.

Currently, the center hosts nearly 300 students studying across 16 talent classes, such as vocal music, dance, traditional musical instruments, guitar, organ, sports dancing, aerobics, Team rituals, along with various other hobby clubs. Trainees of various ages can choose subjects that match their talents and passions.

According to Tạ Văn Hiền, Deputy Director of the provincial Youth Activity Center, the Center has developed plans to organize talent training activities and movements for children and youth, focusing on specialized work, particularly training core teams in the fields of arts, Team rituals, and clubs. This year, the Center expects to open 16 talent classes to meet the recreational, learning, and talent development needs of children and youth during the summer. For the core teams, after completing the program, many children continue to study at professional training schools, becoming singers or working at cultural units in the province and other localities.

Alongside talent development, the demand for equipping students with life skills during the summer is also highly valued by many families. Among these, learning to swim is an activity chosen by a large number of parents, as it is a practical skill that helps children avoid the risk of drowning.

In the early days of summer, at swimming pools in Điện Biên Phủ and Mường Thanh wards, the atmosphere becomes livelier as the number of students registering for courses surges. Trần Thị Thu Hà from Thanh An commune shared that when children are off from school, they have more playtime, so the risk of accidents increases if they lack supervision and necessary knowledge. Participating in swimming lessons helps children receive methodical guidance on swimming techniques as well as situational handling skills in water environments. Simultaneously, this is also a way for them to have a healthy activity environment, limiting dependence on phones, television, or social networks.

In the classes, children are guided from the most basic skills such as getting used to water, practicing breathing, and floating, to standard swimming strokes. The instructional content is structured appropriately for each age group, helping them absorb easily and step-by-step master the skills. According to swimming coach Phạm Mạnh Cường, the goal of the courses does not stop at teaching children how to swim but also focuses on equipping them with drowning prevention skills.

Trainees are instructed on how to tread water, maintain calm when encountering incidents, recognize dangerous situations, and handle them appropriately. This knowledge is crucial because reality shows that many cases of people who know how to swim still experience accidents due to a lack of coping skills when unexpected situations arise.

After a period of participating in the course, many students can confidently execute basic swimming strokes and better understand safety measures. Hà Phương, from Residential Group 6, Điện Biên Phủ ward, shared that they have learned the breaststroke technique and handling skills when encountering someone drowning. This knowledge makes them more confident when participating in underwater activities.

In a context where children are increasingly affected by the online environment and electronic devices, creating healthy and beneficial playgrounds during the summer carries particularly important significance. Talent classes and skill courses are contributing to helping them have a safe, meaningful, and experience-rich summer.
