Điện Biên launches summer swimming lessons for children

ĐBP - As summer approaches, equipping children with swimming skills and drowning prevention techniques becomes more useful and essential than ever.

These days, at the Tân Thanh pool in Điện Biên Phủ ward, the afternoon atmosphere is vibrant with swimming classes, primarily attended by children aged 6 to 12. Each student receives dedicated guidance from instructors, starting with land-based warm-ups before mastering basic skills in the water.

Swimming helps children both exercise and equip themselves with life skills.

Overcoming his initial shyness, Đặng Đình Duy from Điện Biên Phủ ward proudly shared that while he was initially terrified of being underwater, he no longer fears the water and eagerly looks forward to his lessons with friends. Many other children have had similar experiences; though hesitant at first, the encouragement from families and instructors helps them become confident and enthusiastic.

For parents, these lessons are not just about physical health; they help children disconnect from electronic devices and develop vital life-saving skills, addressing a constant concern every summer. Nguyễn Thủy Tiên from Mường Thanh ward noted that the classes are highly beneficial, teaching children to stay afloat, move efficiently, and manage their breathing to conserve energy in various aquatic environments, ultimately allowing them to protect themselves in dangerous situations.

To meet growing demand, the Điện Biên Swimming Center trains roughly 1,000 students every summer, with primary school students making up 70% of the total. The coaching staff is professionally trained and certified in both swimming instruction and rescue.

Most children learning to swim are between the ages of 6 and 12.

Nguyễn Cường Sơn, a coach at the center, mentioned that they are currently instructing over 100 students across the Điện Biên Phủ and Mường Thanh wards. After 10 to 20 sessions, children typically become proficient in basic swimming and water safety according to the center’s standards. The curriculum is designed around a structured progression: acclimatizing to the water, rhythmic breathing, land-based exercises, and final execution in the pool.

Nguyễn Cường Sơn added that tuition for a standard course ranges from VND 1.2 to VND 1.3 million, with a guarantee that the child will successfully learn to swim. Each session lasts about 90 minutes, making it an accessible and practical option for many families. Combining fitness with life-saving knowledge, these swimming classes serve as an engaging and meaningful summer playground for children, contributing significantly to the reduction of drowning accidents.
