Construction of the martyr Pham Phạm Văn Cường memorial site kicked off

ĐBP - On the morning of April 19, at Km17 on National Highway 279 in Điện Biên - Tây Trang (Na Hai hamlet, Sam Mứn commune, Điện Biên district), the Điện Biên provincial Police Department held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the martyr Phạm Văn Cường memorial site.

Comrade Trần Quốc Cường, Member of the Central Party Committee and Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, attended the ceremony.

The memorial is built at the location where comrade Phạm Văn Cường sacrificed his life.

Martyr Phạm Văn Cường, a member of the Lai Châu provincial Police Department (formerly), sacrificed his life during Operation MC 92001 on the night of October 6, 2001, while confronting and apprehending a group involved in the illegal drug trade from Lào to Việt Nam.

Senior Colonel Lù Minh Phương, Deputy Director of the provincial Police Department, presents the memorial’s design plan.

He was struck by gunfire and sacrificed at the age of 25, becoming one of the first police officers to lose their life in the battle against drug-related crime since the establishment of the force in 1998.

A representative from the provincial Police Department receives funding for the memorial’s construction.

To honor this heroic act, the Standing Board of the Điện Biên provincial Party Committee and the provincial authorities instructed the provincial Police Department to coordinate with relevant agencies in planning the construction of a memorial to martyr Phạm Văn Cường.

Delegates attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the memorial site.

The memorial will cover an area of more than 1,100sq.m, consisting of three main functional zones: a foreground area; a central memorial space featuring a monument cluster over 4 meters tall, designed to be both symbolic and artistically significant; and a triangular memorial stone symbolizing the police officer and two civilians who lost their lives during Operation MC92001. At the front, there will be a bust of martyr Phạm Văn Cường, sculpted from solid granite.

Provincial Party Secretary Trần Quốc Cường and delegates offer incense at the grave of martyr Phạm Văn Cường.

The memorial site will not only honor the heroic sacrifice of martyr Phạm Văn Cường, but also serve as a cultural and spiritual space - a “red address” for educating future generations about patriotism and the spirit of serving the people. The site will feature a statue of martyr Phạm Văn Cường and a memorial wall, symbolizing the sacrifices made by police officers in the line of duty.

Delegates plant trees at the memorial site.
