Part 1: Sowing the “seeds of prosperity” on a harsh land
Whenever his name is mentioned, villagers of Đệ Tinh 2 express pride, respect, and admiration. With industrious hands and creative labor, he has written a beautiful story about sowing the “seeds of prosperity” on this challenging land, becoming an exemplary figure in economic development and self-reliance in the border area of Si Pa Phìn.
From poverty eradication…
During a field trip to Si Pa Phìn commune, I had the chance to meet farmer Hồ Chử Goằng again, known among locals as a shining example of resilience and determination to prosper on the windy frontier. His sun-darkened face, weathered with time, and strong build reminiscent of forest hardwoods reminded me of a year earlier, when we trekked together up steep slopes to visit his sprawling farm across several hills in the majestic mountains.
Quickly gathering bundles of grass, Goằng shared: “Winter is coming, so I’ve just reinforced the cattle shed, added roofing, and widened the dirt road up to the farm to make transporting feed easier. It also helps villagers visit and learn cattle-raising techniques.”
Born in Lao Xả Phình commune, former Tủa Chùa district, in 1989 he and his family moved to settle in Đệ Tinh 2 Hamlet. Recalling the early days, he said emotionally: “When we first came, the land was barren hills and gravel, overgrown with weeds. It was discouraging. With many children and constant food shortages, there were times we thought we couldn’t hold on.”

For him, poverty was an “enemy.” Determined to fight it, he focused on farming and livestock. He cleared land plot by plot, uprooted trees, and with meager savings plus borrowed funds, pioneered concentrated livestock farming. At that time, many considered his decision reckless, since locals were still accustomed to free-range grazing.
With limited formal education and no access to textbooks or technical manuals, his knowledge came from practical labor. He patiently observed successful households, listened, and selectively applied useful experiences to his own farm.
Starting with a few breeding buffalo and cattle, he steadily grew the herd by keeping females for reproduction and expanded his scale. He emphasized ensuring sufficient feed, both roughage and supplements like cornmeal and rice bran, while maintaining clean, well-ventilated barns in summer and warm shelters in winter, along with timely vaccinations.
From free-range grazing, he now owns the largest farm in Si Pa Phìn, spanning 30 hectares, with a herd once exceeding 100 animals. Beyond livestock, he reclaimed 4.2 hectares of terraced fields, dug fish ponds, and diversified production, generating over VND 400 million annually, a dream figure for borderland farmers.
From a poor household struggling to survive, Hồ Chử Goằng has become a prosperous farm owner. His story is not only about sustainable poverty eradication but also a source of inspiration for highland farmers striving for a better life.
…to “outstanding Vietnamese farmer”
Now in his fifties, after a lifetime with rice paddies, barns, and livestock, Goằng has reaped many “sweet fruits,” not only in income and a comfortable life but also in community recognition. From district- and provincial-level awards for outstanding farmers to certificates of merit, all testify to his perseverance and dedication.
In October 2024, he was honored as one of 63 exemplary farmers nationwide, receiving the title “Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer.” For a hardship-filled land like Si Pa Phìn, this title is not only a deserved recognition for him but also a source of pride for the entire village and commune.
He humbly said: “I never thought I’d receive such a prestigious award. My only thought was to take care of my family and help villagers gain farming experience to escape poverty together. Being honored makes me emotional. It’s not just my recognition but also for the collective efforts and solidarity of the people here.”
According to Vàng Văn Lập, Vice Chairman of the Fatherland Front Committee and Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Si Pa Phìn Commune: “Goằng is a model of overcoming hardship to prosper. From a poor household, through perseverance and hard work, he built a stable family economy. Beyond his own success, he willingly shares knowledge and helps others, contributing actively to poverty eradication and new rural development.”
Hồ Chử Goằng’s journey is a vivid testament to the resilience, diligence, and aspiration for legitimate prosperity of highland farmers. From barren rocky soil, he sowed the “seeds of prosperity,” inspiring fellow villagers in this borderland. Yet, through all his work and devotion, his one simple, sacred wish remains, to stand under the Party’s flag.
