Typhoon Yagi causes flooding and landslides in Điện Biên

ĐBP – Torrential rains triggered by Typhoon Yagi has caused flooding and landslides in Điện Biên Province, causing significant property damage as well as disrupting agricultural production, according to the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention & Search and Rescue.

Initial reports from the committee indicated that seven houses suffered partial damage, including five in Tủa Chùa District and two in Nậm Pồ District.

In terms of agriculture, 182.1 hectares of rice fields were affected. Of this, nearly two hectares suffered over 70 per cent damage, while more than 180 hectares experienced less than 30 per cent damage.

A resident's house in Phiêng Quảng Hamlet, Xá Nhè Commune in Tủa Chùa District), is hit by landslides due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi.

Floods and landslides have also caused disruptions on nine roads in Mường Chà, Điện Biên Đông, Tủa Chùa, Nậm Pồ, and Điện Biên districts. One school, Nậm Khăn Kindergarten (in Nậm Khăn Commune, Nậm Pồ District) was hit by 15-metre landslide, with an estimated volume of 350 cubic metres.

As of 2pm on Monday morning, total damages were estimated at VNĐ3.1 billion (US$125,530), with Điện Biên District alone accounting for VNĐ2.9 billion ($117,430).

The Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue has actively worked with local People's Committees and relevant units to assess the damage.

They are directing local departments and organisations to assist families with home repairs and agricultural production recovery.

Road management units have deployed personnel and machinery to clear landslides and ensure smooth traffic flow.
