At provincial Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities, the teaching of national defense and security has shifted toward a more practical orientation. In addition to ensuring the curriculum is followed strictly, the school flexibly renovates its methods; theoretical lessons now emphasize discussion, situational handling, and group work, while practical sessions are implemented through rotation stations and competitions between squads.
Vũ Trung Hoàn, the school principal, noted that beyond providing knowledge, the subject helps shape personality and discipline. He observed that as teaching methods evolve, students engage more positively, leading to clear improvements in their school conduct. Furthermore, the school maintains extracurricular activities such as “returning to the roots” field trips, exchanges with the armed forces, and legal dissemination regarding the Law on Military Service to foster patriotism.
At Quài Tở Secondary and High School, despite limited facilities, teachers have organized teaching content effectively through creativity and passion. Many instructors proactively create their own teaching aids and adapt their methods to suit the specific characteristics of their students. Principal Hoàng Xuân Bình views national defense and security as a “subject for human development,” emphasizing that through training, students develop discipline, courage, and a spirit to overcome difficulties, essential foundations for maturing in challenging highland conditions.
The 2025 - 2026 National Defense and Security Sports Festival at the school served as a testament to these teaching innovations. Students participated in various activities, including formal formations, rifle assembly and disassembly, shooting with simulators, grenade throwing, and armed running. Lò Ngọc Hiến, a physical instructor, shared that most students demonstrated agility, precision, and bravery, reflecting their growth in both skills and awareness. Quàng Thị Mai, a student in class 10A1, expressed that the festival helped her better understand homeland traditions and her own responsibilities, making her feel more mature and motivated to study.
Beyond school-based activities, collaboration with local armed forces has been intensified. Recently, Điện Biên Phủ High School coordinated with the provincial Military Command to organize a field trip for students at a simulated combat base. Here, students learned about the functions and duties of the armed forces, observed tunnel systems and fortifications, and experienced field living conditions and basic military skills. These real-world experiences help students grasp the military environment and the spirit of combat readiness, thereby enhancing their sense of duty toward national defense.
In recent years, the strengthened coordination between schools and provincial armed forces has ensured that the percentage of students achieving “Good” or “Excellent” ratings remains high. More importantly, student perception has shifted from passive learning to proactive engagement. The subject has thus become a comprehensive educational channel, fostering ideals and building character for the younger generation to ensure they are ready to meet the requirements of building and protecting the Fatherland in the new era.
