The home of special children

ĐBP - For many years, the Điện Biên provincial Center for Inclusive Education Development has become a second home for special children, those born with physical or intellectual disabilities. With unconditional love, dedication, and patience, the teachers at the center have helped many children with autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays, and other conditions receive timely intervention, opening the door to community integration alongside their peers.

Visiting the center one early morning in May, we saw many children over 10 years old but with cognitive abilities comparable to a 3-year-old. During class, some moved freely, shouted loudly, or sang uncontrollably. The teachers had to pause the lesson, help calm the children, and bring them back to a stable psychological state.

Unlike regular schools, each lesson at the center combines specialized education with psychological therapy. The teachers not only teach literacy and life skills but also gradually awaken the latent potential in each child with heartfelt dedication and admirable persistence.

Đào Thị Thanh Phương, who has been with the center since its establishment, shared: “At first, I was a bit unsure, but after working with students of various disabilities and ages, I realized that to achieve the best teaching outcomes, we must understand the children. Each student here has unique characteristics; teachers strive to develop their strengths and overcome their weaknesses so they can progress optimally. Some came here unable to speak or communicate, sitting withdrawn in a corner of the classroom. But after a few months, they learned to say ‘mom’ and play with friends. Those moments are unforgettable. Some children even learn knitting and crocheting, making beautiful products which we often help sell.”

Every child at the center has a unique story, a challenging journey. Some arrived unable to speak, communicate, or even walk independently. Thanks to the dedication and persistence of the teachers, many have made positive progress. Small achievements have become major milestones in their development.

Teachers here do not only teach literacy and life skills but also awaken the hidden potential in each child with their heart and persistence.

Quàng Thị Nhã Uyên, from Khá village, Mường Phăng commune (Điện Biên Phủ city), had intellectual developmental delays, but after two years of learning and training at the Center, she has made remarkable improvements.

Her mother, Quàng Thị Diên, said: “Since receiving care from the teachers at the Center, my child has become more stable and has changed a lot. She understands her own wishes and the words of her parents. Our family is very grateful to the teachers.”

Established in 2019, the center currently cares for and educates 96 children with various disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, mental disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and more. Among them, 64 students follow specialized education, and 32 receive hourly interventions.

Every child at the center has a unique story, a journey full of challenges.

Trần Thị Đào, Deputy Director of the center, said: “At the start of the school year, we directed teachers to develop suitable curricula, materials, teaching aids, and toys tailored to the characteristics and needs of the children. Our specialized departments organize monthly professional sessions focused on special education, updating teaching methods suitable for each type of disability. We share experiences on developing communication skills, patience in working with disabled children, and skills for observing and assessing their progress. Recognizing this as a special environment, our teaching staff always devote their love fully to the children here.”

To meet the specific needs of each child, the center applies modern educational methods combined with early intervention. Small-scale classes are designed according to individual abilities to help children develop language and life skills. Besides life skills, communication, and rehabilitation classes, the center also offers individual therapy sessions and group activities suitable for different levels of disability.

At the center, children receive individual therapy tailored to their level of disability.

The center is not only a place of learning but also a spiritual support for many families. With the dedication of the silent teachers here, the center has been, is, and will continue to be a home of hope, helping special children integrate into society.
