Science and technology elevate Điện Biên’s agricultural products

ĐBP - Identifying science, technique, and technology as the foundation for sustainable growth, Điện Biên province has been focusing resources on promoting innovation in agricultural production.

The application of technical advances and mechanization is step-by-step improving production efficiency and changing the farming mindset of local people, aiming for a modern, safe, and high-value agricultural sector.

Separated from residential areas and concentrated livestock spots, Pháy Váng in Mường Lạn commune was chosen by Phan Nhất Điện Biên Tea Co., Ltd. to develop an organic tea raw material area. Here, the company has stepped up the application of science and technology to create clean and safe products for consumers. With over 10 hectares of organic tea already planted, the company is gradually forming a sustainable and environmentally friendly farming process.

By strictly following organic standards, the company utilizes microbial organic fertilizers, biological products, and herbal pesticides to replace chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Alongside these methods, the enterprise has pushed for mechanization in care, harvesting, and processing to increase labor productivity and ensure consistent product quality. Phan Trọng Nhất, Director of Phan Nhất Điện Biên Tea Co., Ltd., noted that after analyzing the area, the company realized Pháy Váng was perfectly suited for organic tea. By collaborating with specialized units for technical support and certification, the company has integrated modern machinery into cultivation to meet the increasingly demanding market.

In recent times, Điện Biên has accelerated the restructuring of its coffee industry toward higher added value by linking production with market demand. The Việt Bắc Coffee Import-Export Co., Ltd. has played a key role by organizing training sessions to guide residents in applying science and technology to their crops. Working with specialized agencies, the company has conducted training in communes such as Tuần Giáo, Quài Tở, Mường Lạn, and Nà Tấu, helping farmers transition from traditional experience-based habits to systematic, process-oriented production.

Through these sessions, farmers are guided on using high-yield Arabica varieties and implementing sustainable cultivation processes, such as balanced fertilization between organic and synthetic options. A particular focus is placed on the strict use of pesticides and herbicides according to regulations. Vương Bá Trung, Deputy Director of Việt Bắc Coffee Import-Export Co., Ltd., emphasized that raising coffee value must start with proper technical guidance. Once farmers master the processes of care, harvesting, and preliminary processing, the quality will naturally meet strict market requirements.

The province’s commitment to modernizing agriculture is also reflected in the large-scale land conversion seen in 2025. Approximately 947.68 hectares of rice land were converted to other crops, including over 502 hectares for annual crops like edible canna, taro, sweet potato, and maize, and nearly 445 hectares for perennial trees like coffee, macadamia, and fruit trees.

A standout initiative is the smart rice cultivation model implemented by NetZero Carbon and BSB Nanotech. Covering 76.58 hectares across Mường Thanh ward, Thanh An commune, and Thanh Yên commune, this model focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Initial results show that the rice is growing well, opening a path for green production that adapts to climate change. Furthermore, the province has granted seven new area codes to various enterprises and recognized specialized gardens to facilitate traceability and export.

Various models and projects applying science, technique, and technology to production have proven highly effective recently.

In the livestock sector, closed-farm models are being expanded. The province now hosts seven pig farms utilizing biosecurity processes, and many households have adopted bio-silage for feed to reduce costs. Digital transformation is also playing a role, with information technology and digital data helping farmers grasp market trends in real-time.

The active application of science and technology has significantly elevated the value of local agricultural products. To date, the province boasts 138 certified OCOP (One Commune One Product) items, an increase of 34 products compared to 2024. These technological advancements are not only increasing productivity and quality but are also shaping a professional, modern farming mindset, helping Điện Biên build a brand of safe agricultural products that meet the high standards of today’s consumers.
