The path to school for disadvantaged children in Nà Hỳ commune has been receiving dedicated companionship from border guard officers, soldiers, and Women’s Union branches. Aiming to expand educational access and help children overcome adversity, the Nậm Nhừ Border Post and Nà Hỳ Border Post collaborated to deploy the “Godparents” model, mobilizing further participation from the Women’s Union.
The initiative currently supports 22 children, with the Nậm Nhừ Border Post sponsoring 10 children, the Nà Hỳ Border Post sponsoring 10 children, and the Women’s Unions of Pu Nhi commune and Tìa Dình commune each sponsoring 1 child. Although each child faces distinct hardships, all require care, empathy, and continuous companionship to ensure no one is left behind on their educational and developmental journey.
Beyond material assistance, border guard officers and soldiers regularly offer encouragement, monitor academic progress, and stay updated on the children’s daily lives. The presence of these green-ranked soldiers helps disadvantaged children feel the community’s warmth, giving them greater motivation to attend school and rise above challenges.
Major Đỗ Xuân Điềm, Political Officer of the Nậm Nhừ Border Post, stated that the “Godparents” initiative in Nà Hỳ commune currently supports 22 disadvantaged children. With the two local Border Posts each sponsoring 10 children, the participation of the Women’s Unions of Pu Nhi commune and Tìa Dình commune in sponsoring children within Nà Hỳ commune concretizes the coordination program between the provincial Border Guard Command and the provincial Women’s Union.
From tangible grassroots actions, the “Godparents” program is gradually building an expansive network of care. Alongside border guard forces, Women’s Union branches across the province actively survey individual circumstances, connecting with organizations, individuals, and benefactors to find suitable godmothers and godfathers.
Statistics show that the province currently has over 5,000 orphans who require timely, specialized, and sustained assistance. Given the vast territory where many highland and border communes face severe hardships, caring for children with special needs demands close coordination among families, schools, authorities, mass organizations, and society. Since the beginning of the year, Women’s Union chapters across the province have supported 207 children with total funds exceeding VND 190 million alongside numerous essential goods.
To ensure aid reaches the right beneficiaries effectively and practically, provincial Women’s Union chapters have proactively assessed local realities, understood pressing needs, and verified specific cases while continually updating records of orphans and vulnerable children. On this basis, the union mobilizes and connects with godmothers, organizations, and individuals to establish fitting support methods.
According to Pờ Diệu Ninh, President of the Điện Biên provincial Women’s Union, supporting children in extremely difficult circumstances is a mission requiring continuous, long-term cooperation across the political system and the broader community. For children in special circumstances, support must be maintained throughout their schooling and maturation, as they need encouragement when facing difficulties, motivation when progressing, and timely intervention when at risk of dropping out or encountering life obstacles.
Given these realities, Women’s Union chapters will continue mobilizing officials, members, agencies, businesses, and benefactors to participate in the “Godmothers” campaign. The initiative aims to expand the number of supported children while elevating the quality, regularity, and sustainability of sponsorship activities, ensuring every child finds a dependable anchor during challenging years.
The joint sponsorship efforts among Women’s Union branches, armed forces, agencies, and units embody a deeply humane approach. With combined community support, children gain better learning conditions and stable living environments. Bolstered by their own resilience, these disadvantaged youth receive greater opportunities to thrive, mature into productive citizens, and contribute to building a prosperous Điện Biên homeland.
