Impressive “national flag road” across Mường Thanh rice fields

ĐBP - In the historic autumn days, as the nation celebrates National Day (September 2), a striking red ribbon has appeared in the heart of Điện Biên Basin. Woven into the endless green of the Mường Thanh rice fields, this “flag road through the rice fields” is the creation of youth, love for the homeland, and collective unity, forming a new symbol of pride for this heroic land.

The Mường Thanh rice fields, once a witness to history, don a peaceful, fertile beauty with each rice season. This year, that beauty shines even brighter with the red of hundreds of national flags flying proudly along the concrete road through Khá hamlet and Pom Loi hamlet in Mường Thanh ward. The meaningful idea was initiated by Phan Thạch Thành, Director of the Điện Biên Tourism Company, a native son deeply devoted to local tourism.

“I’ve seen many beautiful and meaningful flag roads across the country, but our hometown hasn’t had one yet. Điện Biên has countless breathtaking landscapes, from majestic terraced fields to lush cornfields. Right here in Mường Thanh ward, Khá hamlet’s fields are already a ‘super hot’ check-in spot during harvest season. So why not make it even more special?” he shared.

The thought quickly turned into action. Yet one individual, no matter how passionate, could hardly manage a long road lined with hundreds of flags. Without hesitation, he posted his idea on social media, calling for collective effort. His appeal touched many hearts: some donated a few flags, others contributed millions of VND. All shared a common love and aspiration to beautify their homeland.

Locals delighted as the flag-lined road is completed.

Funds alone were not enough, the project required hands to build it. Once again, solidarity made the difference. Recognizing that this was more than just an aesthetic project, but also a meaningful way to educate patriotism among the young and promote tourism, the Điện Biên provincial Youth Union quickly joined in.

Present at the fields alongside youth members to plant flagpoles, Lò Xuân Hạnh, Deputy Secretary of the provincial Youth Union, said: “The national flag road is not only a beautiful image but also a message of unity and patriotism. Hanging the national flag on major holidays like April 30, September 2, or special events is an expression of pride. This is also a form of visual education about our history, igniting love for the country among the community and attracting young people to visit, take meaningful photos, and spread patriotism. We hope this will strengthen young people’s pride in the national flag and in the historic land of Điện Biên.”

With the Youth Union’s involvement, momentum grew stronger. Trần Thị Phương Hoa, Secretary of the Mường Thanh ward Youth Union, noted: “As soon as we received instructions, we mobilized 50 members to join the sponsor in implementing the flag road. Everyone was proud to contribute to such a meaningful project.”

Crowds of residents and visitors check in at the new site.

Within a short time, the concrete road was transformed. Hundreds of red flags with golden stars stood upright and evenly spaced. Against the lush green rice, the flag road stretched out like a soft red ribbon, winding gracefully to form a majestic yet poetic scene. Immediately after completion, it became a social media phenomenon. Many residents, especially young people, flocked to admire, photograph, and film the site. Whether in áo dài, red T-shirt with yellow star, or simple yet respectful attire, they all carried the same spirit: patriotism and pride.

Under the clear blue sky, áo dài and the red flag with yellow star create a striking scene.

Nguyễn Nam Khánh, founder of the “Điện Biên Lang Thang” social media channel, was among the first to capture the moment. His video quickly went viral, reaching 192,000 views on Facebook and 55,000 on TikTok within a single day. Khánh shared: “When my video of the flag road in Mường Thanh spread, I was deeply moved. At first, I only wanted to capture a simple moment, a small road across vast green fields, with national flags flying in the wind. But unexpectedly, the image resonated with so many. What makes me happiest is not the views or shares, but seeing our community united in pride before the national flag waving on this historic land.”

Trương Thị Ngọc Mai, a young woman from Mường Thanh ward, was among the first to check in. She said emotionally: “When I saw the first photos online, I wanted to come here immediately. It’s not just a beautiful photo spot, but a sacred and proud feeling to stand among rows of national flags. This is such a meaningful initiative.”

Reportedly, the “flag road across Mường Thanh rice fields” is just the beginning. In the future, Phan Thạch Thành, the Youth Union, and local partners plan to create another flag road at the terraced fields in Phù Lồng hamlet, Pu Nhi commune, another ideal check-in destination for nature lovers.

Clearly, this flag road is not only beautiful for its colors, but also for the hearts behind it, the initiator, silent donors, and enthusiastic youth members. Above all, it reflects the spirit of community, the love for homeland, and patriotism expressed in a simple yet profoundly sacred way.
