Driving positive change to improve quality of general education

ĐBP - In the 2024-2025 academic year, the Điện Biên provincial Department of Education and Training (DoET) launched a plan to enhance the quality of general education with strong, proactive solutions.

Particularly, it includes annual assessments at the beginning and end of the school year, ranking schools by level across the province, and aligning with the reform of teacher and administrator evaluation systems. This approach has generated positive changes and contributed significantly to a successful school year.

At the beginning of the school year, Thanh Nưa Secondary School (Điện Biên district) conducted assessments across all grades and subjects, ranking 15th out of all secondary schools in the province. Based on this, the school, along with its departments and individual teachers, discussed and analyzed the students’ academic strengths and weaknesses to develop a plan to improve teaching and learning quality. The school placed special focus on preparing 9th-grade students for the entrance exam to high school. At the end of the year, while no general rankings were given, the results in individual subjects and grades were notably higher compared to the beginning of the year.

Nguyễn Thị Thu Hằng, Principal of Thanh Nưa Secondary School, shared: “The assessment, ranking, and evaluation process received full support from our staff. This not only reflects the true quality of our school and teachers but also motivates each individual and the whole school to take responsibility, overcome challenges, and actively innovate teaching methods. After the assessment, we continue to exchange expertise and learn from top-performing schools.”

The evaluation, assessment, and ranking processes at Thanh Nưa Secondary School have been embraced by the teachers and staff, becoming a motivation and goal for individual improvement. In the photo: A class session at 9D1, Thanh Nưa Secondary School.

The evaluation of student input and output, coupled with the accountability of administrators and teachers, has been systematically carried out from grades 2 to 12 across the province. Hoàng Tuyết Ban, Director of the provincial DoET, stated: “We assign the relevant departments to create and implement plans for the assessments, including creating the surveys for the beginning and end of the year, organizing cross-checking among schools, and compiling the data to finalize the quality metrics for each class and teacher. This is vital for our ongoing improvements and ensuring that education quality is consistently monitored and raised.”

Along with these innovative measures, the provincial DoET has implemented numerous other solutions, including enhancing public awareness of the significance and goals of improving general education quality across schools. These measures involve improving the quality of teaching at each level, reinforcing educational infrastructure, setting and ensuring standards, improving management practices, and integrating technology into teaching and management.

At Him Lam Secondary School (Điện Biên Phủ city), these initiatives have been actively implemented. Cao Thị Đại, Principal of Him Lam School, stated: “Last year, we implemented all the measures in a coordinated way, especially focusing on innovating teaching methods and improving real, effective assessment and evaluation. We emphasize professional development for our teachers, frequently organizing subject-specific meetings to address challenges and find solutions.”

As of now, schools have completed their annual assessments and submitted the results. The provincial DoET is reviewing the data and preparing for analysis and ranking. Although no specific results have been announced yet, Hoàng Tuyết Ban believed that the implementation of the general education quality improvement plan for the 2024-2025 school year has resulted in many positive changes. The educational facilities have been improved, and the whole community has become more involved in enhancing the quality of education in our schools.

Looking ahead, based on the results of middle school admissions and high school graduation rates, the provincial DoET will continue to assess progress against the targets set, revise strategies, and prepare plans for the 2025-2026 academic year.
