50 children in special circumstances trained in swimming and drowning prevention skills

ĐBP - 50 children with special circumstances, currently residing at the SOS Children’s Village Điện Biên Phủ, the provincial Social Welfare Center, and from underprivileged families in several districts and communes in Điện Biên province participated in a swimming and drowning prevention skills training course organized by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

This is the second such course held by the department this year, in line with the provincial People’s Committee’s directive to implement the “Safe Swimming and Drowning Prevention Program for Children by 2030.”

The instructor provides essential safety knowledge before children enter the water.

The participants, aged 8 to 15, are children facing difficult circumstances. Over five days (from June 25 to 29), they received information about the current state and causes of child drowning, as well as instructions on safety skills in water environments and how to assist drowning victims. The course also covered accident prevention, basic swimming techniques, how to handle situations while swimming, and first aid skills.

Statistics from 2020 to 2024 show that Điện Biên province recorded 49 child drownings (16 cases among children aged 0-5, 18 cases among those aged 6-11, and 15 cases among children aged 12-15).

The instructor guides and supports children in learning swimming skills.

There are many reasons for child drowning, but one of the main causes is that children lack swimming skills and knowledge on drowning prevention. Therefore, organizing training courses on drowning prevention and swimming for children is essential to equip them with basic knowledge and skills, which will help reduce drowning incidents among children in the area.
