Affirming position of Điện Biên agriculture

ĐBP - With an orientation towards developing commodity-based agriculture and applying science and technology, Điện Biên is gradually affirming its position on the agricultural map of the Northwestern region.

To help agricultural products reach domestic markets and move towards export, Điện Biên province has implemented many mechanisms and policies to support farmers, created conditions for businesses and cooperatives to link up for product consumption, and strengthened promotion and introduction of agricultural products to consumers.

Despite complex weather developments, Điện Biên’s agricultural production has maintained stability and achieved many positive results. Party committees, local authorities, and specialized agencies at all levels have proactively issued resolutions and plans to implement goals for developing agricultural and forestry production linked with building new rural areas. They have specified and focused on building policies to support the conversion of crops, livestock, and aquaculture, and to support the formation of production linkage chains connected with the processing and consumption of agricultural products.

Điện Biên rice has become famous for its distinctive aroma and uniquely delicious, pliable texture, making it one of the locality’s key agricultural products. Currently, the province continues to promote the development of food crop production towards improving quality and increasing product value. The cultivated area for wet rice reaches 30,842ha, with an output of 172,013 tons, including over 11,000ha of high-quality rice featuring key varieties such as Séng cù and Bắc thơm số 7. This has gradually formed specialized rice production zones, meeting the increasing demands of the domestic market.

Many fruit tree cultivation models have been formed and developed through the improvement of mixed gardens and planting on sloping land, moving towards concentrated, large-scale, and key commodity production. The province focuses on selecting, breeding, and multiplying parent stock, gradually shifting from small-scale, fragmented production to concentrated production, forming raw material zones to serve chain linkages and product processing. To date, the total fruit tree area across the province is estimated at 4,159.56ha, including 1,139.52ha newly planted and 2,138.9ha yielding harvests. Many high-quality fruit tree varieties suitable for the local natural conditions have been introduced into production, such as green-skinned pomelo, dragon fruit, Thai jackfruit, and Pu Lau pineapple, contributing to the diversification of agricultural products.

By 2025, the total area of rubber, coffee, and tea across the province reached over 11,200ha, an increase of more than 2,244ha compared to the beginning of the term. The output of coffee beans is estimated at 23.28 thousand tons (exceeding 172% of the plan), and rubber latex at 26.75 thousand tons (reaching 99.11% of the plan). Macadamia cultivation continues to expand, reaching over 10,600ha. The total fruit tree area in the province is estimated at over 4,100ha, an increase of more than 1,000ha compared to 2020. The “farmer - cooperative - enterprise” linkage model has begun to form, with over 200 projects approved. Some characteristic agricultural products have established brands and geographical indications, such as Tủa Chùa tea and Mường Ảng coffee.

Besides expanding the area and increasing the quantity of agricultural products, Điện Biên province places special emphasis on post-harvest preservation, processing, and trade promotion to enhance value and expand domestic consumer markets towards export. Currently, the entire province has 1,847 processing facilities serving the living and production needs of the people, including facilities for processing agricultural products, food, small handicrafts, and providing agricultural services. Many processed products have shown clear improvements in quality, design, packaging, labeling, and traceability. Some raw material zones have been certified according to VietGAP standards or organic production certification.

To bring agricultural products closer to consumers, the provincial People’s Committee has reviewed and recognized products meeting OCOP standards, affirming their reputation and quality. All levels and sectors actively promote and introduce products by participating in domestic and regional trade fairs, tourism weeks, and provincial events. At the same time, products are listed on e-commerce platforms, helping to connect consumption and promote exports.

In the 2021 - 2025 period, Điện Biên province actively implemented many trade promotion activities to expand the market for agricultural products. The province organized business delegations to participate in domestic trade exhibitions in provinces and cities like Hanoi, Sơn La, and Quảng Ninh. It also participated in many typical promotional programs and events such as the Business Matching Program between suppliers from the Northern and North Central regions and export enterprises, the international conference for export industries combined with online and offline trade matching in 2022 in Lào Cai, the “Meet Thailand” conference in Quảng Trị, the Điện Biên - Northwest Culture and Tourism Week in Ho Chi Minh City, the Điện Biên Culture and Tourism Week in Hanoi, the Ban Flower Festival in 2024, and various online forums and conferences on export promotion.

All levels and sectors in the province have focused on supporting people in accessing and applying e-commerce for product consumption. To date, 28,998 agricultural production households have been trained in using e-commerce platforms; 3,871 households have received training in digital skills and online activities; and 1,194 households have online accounts and stalls. Currently, 493 agricultural products from the province are being introduced and promoted on e-commerce platforms.

E-commerce has now become an effective consumption channel, helping OCOP products expand their market. Clearly recognizing this, many cooperatives in Điện Biên have boldly entered the “digital playground.” For example, the Hồng Phước Cooperative (Nà Tấu commune) with its arrowroot vermicelli product. Since early 2025, Cooperative Director Lò Văn Pâng started building a sales channel on Tiktok. After just four months, the “Miến dong Hồng Phước” channel attracted over 83,000 followers and nearly half a million likes. Each livestream sales session attracts thousands to tens of thousands of interested viewers, and average revenue has increased by 30% compared to before.

With the right development orientation, the support of all levels of government, and the spirit of effort and creativity from the people, Điện Biên’s agricultural products are increasingly affirming their position in the market. From fragrant, pliable rice grains, rich coffee beans, and nutritious macadamia nuts to distinctive OCOP products imbued with highland identity – all are contributing to building the brand of Điện Biên agricultural products known for quality, safety, and sustainability, becoming a source of pride for farmers and a bright spot in the picture of agricultural economic development.
