Over recent years, the blood donation movement across Điện Biên province has been steadily maintained and developed, drawing widespread participation from the community. At the provincial General Hospital, the demand for blood for emergency and treatment purposes remains consistently high, even as reserves are occasionally limited. In critical situations, the timely support of the community has been instrumental in helping patients overcome life-threatening dangers.
A notable instance occurred in late October 2025 at the provincial General Hospital involving a pregnant woman at 36 weeks who required emergency surgery due to severe obstetric complications. During the procedure, the patient lost a significant amount of blood, necessitating a large transfusion to sustain her life, just as the hospital’s Type O blood reserves had been exhausted. Facing this urgent situation, the hospital issued a public appeal for donations, and within a very short time, numerous local residents arrived to register and help. Bùi Thị Thùy, from Residential Group 9 of Điện Biên Phủ ward, shared that despite not knowing the patient, her own experience as a mother drove her to help, hoping for the patient’s swift recovery. Similarly, Nguyễn Văn Chung from Residential Group 23 of the same ward emphasized that even a small contribution from an individual can help others through their most difficult moments.
The demand for blood in emergency care is often volatile and difficult to predict, and when reserves of common blood types run dry, it places immense pressure on medical professionals. Consequently, the blood donation movement serves as a lifeline for continuous hospital operations.
Recently, mobilization efforts have been implemented through diverse campaigns such as the “Tết Blood Donation” and the “Spring Red Festival.” During the 2026 Tết and Spring Red Festival campaign, the province received 1,183 units of blood, reaching 18.7% of the annual plan. Specifically, the 2026 Spring Red Festival attracted over 500 participants and collected 449 units, exceeding its set target.
Nguyễn Thị Dân, Vice Chairwoman of the provincial Red Cross, noted that public awareness has significantly improved, with participation numbers increasing annually. To achieve this, the Red Cross focuses on flexible dissemination tailored to specific localities and audiences across various media platforms. However, the movement still faces hurdles due to the province’s vast and fragmented terrain, which makes organizing donation drives in remote areas difficult. Furthermore, limited funding for dissemination and event organization occasionally affects the efficiency of mobilization. Moving forward, the provincial Red Cross plans to diversify mobilization methods and increase mobile blood donation sessions to make it easier for people in all areas to participate.
Blood donation remains a profound act of human kindness and community responsibility. The “red drops” given not only save lives but also spread compassion throughout society.
