In Điện Biên, sightseeing sites, tourist attractions, accommodation establishments, and tourism service facilities are progressively implementing smoke-free environments, helping enhance visitor experiences, protect public health, and forge a green, clean, and civilized destination image.
The entire province currently has more than 250 accommodation establishments, comprising 39 hotels, 152 guest houses, 18 rest houses, and 42 homestays. Across accommodation establishments, hotels, and tourism service venues, no-smoking regulations have been incorporated into internal operational codes; warning signs are placed in conspicuous locations, and staff proactively remind guests to comply. This approach contributes to step-by-step integrating the smoke-free environment into building a quality tourism space, meeting the escalating expectations of tourists.
For Điện Biên province, core strengths in its historical relic network, diverse ethnic cultural identities, and natural landscapes create a distinct appeal for visitors. Alongside investing in material facilities and elevating service quality, constructing a civilized, friendly destination image is increasingly emphasized. Within this, maintaining a smoke-free environment at tourist areas, attractions, accommodation facilities, restaurants, and crowded public spaces is an essential aspect requiring routine execution.
The A1 Hill historical relic site is one of the signature landmarks of the Điện Biên Phủ Battlefield Special National Monument complex. A1 Hill frequently welcomes visitor delegations, pupils, and students to tour and study history. Consequently, alongside preserving artifacts and landscapes, elevating visitors’ awareness and responsibility throughout their tour - including adherence to regulations on tobacco harm prevention and control - is prioritized.
Reminders regarding sanitation maintenance, landscape protection, and civilized lifestyles are integrated into guest reception and tour guiding processes. Curtailing smoking in public gathering areas helps preserve fresh air, mitigates the impacts of second-hand smoke on surrounding visitors, and safeguards the solemnity of historical memorial spaces.
Vũ Thị Tuyết Nga, Director of the Điện Biên Phủ Museum, stated: Historical relic sites across the province serve as destinations for sightseeing and traditional education, regularly receiving tour groups, pupils, and students seeking to learn about the history of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory. Therefore, creating a clean, safe, and fresh sightseeing environment while curbing tobacco smoke bears vital significance in elevating experiential quality and providing an appropriate setting for historical and traditional education activities. Simultaneously, it demonstrates deep reverence toward the historical and cultural values enshrined across the monuments.
In the coming time, the Culture, Sports and Tourism sector will continue to step up communication campaigns, integrating tobacco harm prevention and control into training activities, promotional campaigns, and tourism development programs; concurrently, it will coordinate with relevant agencies to strengthen guidance, inspections, and monitoring across tourist attractions, accommodation establishments, and service businesses.
Through tangible shifts across each facility, every destination, and heightened individual awareness in tobacco prevention, a smoke-free tourism environment will progressively become an integral part of building high-quality tourism products. This actively contributes to realizing sustainable tourism goals and establishing Điện Biên’s image as a green, civilized, safe, friendly, and culturally rich destination.
