Spring in Điện Biên

ĐBP - Every spring, Điện Biên transforms into a radiant landscape, warm and rich with vitality through the rhythmic shifting of the seasons, reflected in every gaze, smile, and the many reunions of spring travelers.

The spring of Điện Biên is not noisy or rushed but gentle and peaceful. Along the winding mountain passes of the highlands, the season arrives with shimmering golden sunlight dancing upon drifting clouds. In the “stone plateau” of the province’s Northeast, where gray rocks form mountains and mountains rise in layers, villages nestle against the slopes in a scene that is both serene and majestic.

Amidst the gray backdrop of stone and the white of the mist, peach blossoms and bombax flowers burst into bloom in front of porches, beside mountain fields, and across the hillsides. The bright crimson and soft pink petals standing out against the gray stone highlight the beauty of the highland spring. During these festive days, ethnic communities wear their most vibrant traditional costumes, harmonizing with the sounds of panpipes, flutes, and laughter to create an atmosphere that is simultaneously bustling and simple.

In Huổi Lóng village, Tủa Thàng commune, beside the majestic Đà River, spring is the season for meetings and the exchange of sentiments. Usually starting from the 4th day of Tết, boats leisurely cut through the waves to dock at Huổi Lóng, where Dao men and women in traditional attire meet to celebrate and sing folk songs as a promise of a happy and prosperous life. Phàn A Cỏng, Head of Huổi Lóng village, shared that the singing exchanges are not only a chance for young people to find life partners but also a time for the elderly to reconnect with old friends and reminisce about the springs of their youths.

Beyond the raw beauty of the highlands, the spring spirit is also reflected in carefully tended landscapes within the Điện Biên basin. For those who prefer not to travel far, check-in points like the C9 flower field and Hoa Ban Park have become favored destinations. However, a true spring in this region would be incomplete without the traditional festivals, which serve as a colorful mosaic of indigenous cultures. One of the earliest annual events is the bullfighting festival in Na Son commune, which begins on the 2nd day of the Lunar New Year.

From early morning, thousands of residents and tourists gather to cheer as over 40 strong, carefully selected bulls enter the arena. This festival is more than a display of strength; it reflects the meticulous care and skill of the local raisers. Alongside the main event, traditional sports like còn ball throwing, pa pao, pole pushing, and tug-of-war foster a spirit of solidarity. Lò Văn Muôn, a visitor from Sông Mã commune, Sơn La province, noted that the hospitality of the local people made his family’s long journey particularly memorable.

For travelers seeking a deeper understanding of cultural traditions, the Gầu Tào festival of the Mông people in Nà Bủng commune is an essential stop. This significant early-year event symbolizes prayers for health, prosperity, and luck. In the heart of the highland villages, a ritual pole (nêu tree) is erected as the center of the festivities.

Lê Thị Minh Anh, visiting from Hà Nội, shared her deep impression of the vibrant attire and the meaningful custom of having a shaman tie a red thread around her wrist for luck. From the windy stone plateaus to the basin destinations, and from the energetic bullfighting to the solemn ceremonies of Gầu Tào, every corner of Điện Biên offers a unique shade of spring, contributing to the multifaceted beauty of this historic land.
