Macadamia planting festival in Tuần Giáo

ĐBP - We arrived in Cọ Village, Quài Nưa commune (Tuần Giáo district, Điện Biên province) in mid-May, amidst the vibrant atmosphere of young people, government officials, civil servants, and military personnel actively participating in planting macadamia trees to assist the local community. This marks the second consecutive year Tuần Giáo district has organized a launch event for planting and caring for macadamia trees.

In a lively atmosphere with people planting trees, mixing fertilizer, filling soil, staking, and watering, we spoke with Lường Thị Liên, a teacher at Sơn Ca Kindergarten, Quài Nưa commune. Liên shared: “In response to the 2025 launch event for planting and caring for macadamia trees in the district, our school sent five staff members to participate. We were guided by technical experts from the district’s Agricultural Service Center on the proper planting process. I am very happy to have contributed a small part to the transformation of the crop structure and the restructuring of the district’s agriculture.”

The large number of local people, youth volunteers, government officials, and civil servants in Tuần Giáo district join in planting macadamia trees in Cọ village, Quài Nưa commune.

The happiest and most excited were the family of Cà Văn Tỉnh, whose farm was selected by the local government as the site to launch the 2025 macadamia planting and care event. This year, Tỉnh’s family planted 153 macadamia trees, receiving 100% support from the government for seedlings, fertilizer, and lime.

Cà Văn Tỉnh said: “Our family is very excited because not only did we receive support for the tree seedlings and fertilizer, but we also had the help of youth volunteers, local people, teachers, and military personnel in planting the trees. I thank the Party, the State, and local authorities for supporting farmers. We promise to take good care of the macadamia orchard, following the guidelines and instructions from technical experts.”

In organizing the 2025 launch event for planting and caring for macadamia trees, Tuần Giáo district mobilized more than 120 people to participate. This marks the second consecutive year that Tuần Giáo district has organized this activity with the goal of changing people’s mindset and awareness about crop restructuring, agricultural restructuring, and contributing to economic development and poverty reduction. Various communes in the district have launched numerous models and movements, such as: Promoting collective roles through labor exchange in agricultural restructuring, coffee harvesting and care competitions, and macadamia hole digging contests.

People from Rạng Đông commune, Tuần Giáo district, implement the model “Promoting collective roles through labor exchange in agricultural restructuring,” swapping labor to dig holes for planting macadamia trees.

With the province’s attention, the coordinated efforts of the entire political system, and strong support and participation from the people, in 2025, Tuần Giáo district successfully mobilized 3,700 households to register for planting 2,168.1 hectares of macadamia trees. By the end of March 2025, the people had completed digging 345,272 holes. By April 15, 2025, the fertilizer mixing and hole filling work had been completed, ready for planting. By now, some communes in Tuần Giáo have already planted macadamia trees, achieving and even surpassing the set schedule. Notable examples include Chiềng Sinh with 100%, Rạng Đông (90%), and Mường Thín (97%)...

In recent years, the Party Committee and local authorities of Tuần Giáo district have shown a strong determination, bold thinking, and willingness to choose crop restructuring as one of the district’s key strategic breakthrough tasks. They have also identified macadamia and coffee as the two main crops suitable for the region, with high economic value, providing practical opportunities for sustainable poverty reduction and gradually improving the lives of local people. Currently, the district has 5,913.7 hectares of macadamia trees, making Tuần Giáo the largest macadamia-producing district in the country, with the participation of 8,225 households, accounting for nearly 50% of the total agricultural households in the district.

People from Tỏa Tình commune receive macadamia seedlings from the district’s Agricultural Service Center.

Hà Cầm Hồng, Chairman of the Tuần Giáo district People’s Committee, said: “Leveraging our potential advantages, the district will continue to focus on developing agricultural production in a commodity-oriented direction, applying science and technology, promoting clean and organic agriculture, and linking production in value chains. We will expand cooperatives and production teams, focusing on developing and enhancing the value of OCOP products from macadamia and coffee.”
