Điện Biên ready for the new school year

ĐBP - With only one week left before the official start of the 2025-2026 academic year, more than 200,000 students in Điện Biên province, together with millions nationwide, are preparing to return to school after the summer break. At this point, schools across the province have essentially completed preparations and are ready for the new school year.

For the 2025-2026 school year, Sính Phình No.1 Semi-Boarding Primary School for Ethnic Minorities will have 16 classes with over 430 students. Principal Bùi Quang Trung shared that in preparation for the new year, the school reviewed its facilities and equipment to carry out repairs and request additional purchases where necessary. With its current facilities, the school is able to meet teaching and learning needs. The school has 16 permanent classrooms, four function rooms, and six boarding rooms to provide meals and accommodation for about 350 students. Since early August, the school has organized cleaning activities to ensure a clean and pleasant environment and has successfully enrolled all children of school age into Grade 1. Based on parental needs, the school has also supported the purchase of textbooks for students. Its staff of administrators, teachers, and employees is sufficient in number and quality, having undergone political training and professional development.

Mùn Chung Semi-Boarding Lower Secondary School has received an investment of VND 18.2 billion for the construction of a three-story building with ten classrooms, 18 dormitory rooms, a dining hall, a kitchen, boundary walls, drainage, and an outdoor stage. The project is being urgently completed to be handed over before the school year begins. Enrollment targets have been exceeded, and the school expects 17 classes with 630 students in the new year. To support students, textbooks from last year have been donated for disadvantaged children to borrow, and parents have been encouraged to purchase full sets of books and supplies. The school still faces the challenge of being short five teachers, so it must adjust teaching arrangements while requesting additional staff allocations.

Teachers at Sính Phình No.1 Semi-Boarding Primary School for Ethnic Minorities welcome Grade 1 students.

Across the province, the 2025-2026 academic year will involve 481 public schools and centers with about 7,406 classes and more than 200,000 students. This includes 167 preschools with 2,408 groups and over 53,000 children, 140 primary schools with 2,824 classes and over 72,700 students, 123 lower secondary schools with 1,543 classes and more than 56,340 students, and 33 upper secondary schools with 562 classes and over 20,000 students.

According to Hoàng Tuyết Ban, Director of the provincial Department of Education and Training (DOET), to best prepare for the school year, schools have been directed to accelerate infrastructure repair and investment projects. The department has coordinated with the provincial People’s Committee to ensure textbook demand is properly assessed and met. In remote and flood-affected areas where transportation is disrupted, schools have been instructed to assess damage and request additional support. The DOET has worked with the Vietnam Education Publishing House to provide 1,235 sets of textbooks for primary and lower secondary students in five flood-affected schools: Suối Lư Primary and Secondary School, Mường Luân Semi-Boarding Primary School for Ethnic Minorities, Tìa Dình Semi-Boarding Primary School for Ethnic Minorities, Chiềng Sơ Semi-Boarding Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, and Tìa Dình Semi-Boarding Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities. The department has also launched a “Shared Bookshelf” movement to mobilize contributions from organizations and individuals so that disadvantaged students do not go without textbooks.

To improve teacher quality, the sector has organized professional training courses to meet the requirements of comprehensive education reform and the 2018 General Education Program. A major challenge is the shortage of over 1,380 teachers compared to the required quota across all levels. To address this, the province is conducting recruitment for 70 high school teacher positions and planning to hire nearly 300 additional preschool, primary, and lower secondary teachers, with the Department of Home Affairs advising the provincial People’s Committee. The sector is also working on plans to reallocate teachers among schools and regions to minimize local shortages or surpluses, ensuring teaching quality for the new school year.
