Attending the workshop were: Nguyễn Quang Hưng, Member of the Standing Board of the provincial Party Committee, Secretary of the Party Committee of Điện Biên Phủ ward; Nguyễn Minh Phú, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism; leaders of several units under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; tourism consulting experts from within and outside the province; and leaders of local party committees and authorities.

Phiêng Lơi village is located in the north of Điện Biên Phủ ward, about 6km from the ward center, situated next to National Highway 6 - the vital traffic axis connecting Điện Biên province with Sơn La, Hòa Bình, and Hà Nội. The total natural area of the village is about 114ha, with relatively flat terrain, favorable for developing agricultural production and community tourism.

Currently, the village has 68 households, 100% of whom are Thai ethnic people of the Black Thai branch, who have lived there for a long time. The village has beautiful natural scenery, relatively flat terrain, lying along both banks of the Nậm Rốm river, surrounded by low mountain slopes, creating an airy space close to nature. Many traditional stilt houses of the Black Thai people are arranged harmoniously, demonstrating cultural identity and characteristic residence customs, very favorable for developing community tourism. Community tourism activities in Phiêng Lơi village have existed since 2020; although not yet strongly developed, a number of products and services serving tourists have been formed.

Speaking at the workshop, Nguyễn Minh Phú emphasized that developing community tourism has been an effort implemented by Điện Biên province for many years to preserve and promote the traditional cultural values of ethnic groups throughout the province. He hoped that at this Workshop, experts, businesses, and representatives of Phiêng Lơi village would focus on assessing the current status, opportunities, and challenges in developing community tourism in Phiêng Lơi village. Thereby suggesting, orienting, and proposing solutions in management, exploitation, and promotion of resources contributing to the sustainable development of community tourism in Phiêng Lơi village.

At the workshop, delegates heard managers, scientists, experts, units, and enterprises present and discuss contents related to tourism development in general and community tourism in Phiêng Lơi village in particular, including: Some issues on community tourism development and orientations and suggestions for Điện Biên province; management models for community tourism activities in Phiêng Lơi village; human resource training for community tourism development; orientations and solutions to preserve and exploit traditional cultural values of the Thai ethnic people associated with community tourism development; building cooperative models in community tourism development; developing rural tourism in building new-style rural areas and preserving traditional crafts, etc.

The workshop also dedicated time to focus on assessing and analyzing “bottlenecks” that need to be removed, issues posed in developing community tourism in Phiêng Lơi village in the coming time; forecasting impacting factors, and proposing directions and solutions to promote sustainable community tourism development in Phiêng Lơi village...
