Mường Lay sets national record for traditional white Thái stilt houses

ĐBP - On the morning of May 8, the people’s committee of Mường Lay town, Điện Biên province, in coordination with the Vietnam records organization, held a ceremony at the Mechanical Wharf of Mường Lay to announce the Vietnam record “The town with the highest density of traditional stilt houses of the white Thái ethnic group in Vietnam”.

The event was attended by Phạm Đức Toàn, member of the Standing Board of the provincial Party Committee and Standing Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Điện Biên.

Mường Lay currently has 1,192 households living in traditional stilt houses, out of a total of 3,198 households across the town. This results in a stilt house density of approximately 10.58 houses per square kilometer - significantly higher than other areas with white Thái communities, such as Quỳnh Nhai district (Sơn La province) with 1.24 houses/km2; Mộc Châu town (Sơn La) with 1.6 houses/km2; Nậm Nhùn district (Lai Châu) with 1.44 houses/km2; and Phong Thổ district (Lai Châu) with 0.27 houses/km2.

Aiming to honor cultural heritage and promote the local image, the Mường Lay town People’s Committee compiled and submitted a nomination dossier for the Vietnam record. The survey, data collection, and documentation of traditional stilt houses of the white Thái group followed the standards and procedures set by the Vietnam records organization.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman Phạm Đức Toàn emphasized that this recognition is not only a source of pride for the Party, authorities, and people of Mường Lay, but also a shared achievement for the entire Điện Biên province. He noted that the event highlights efforts to preserve and promote ethnic cultural values, while also positioning Mường Lay as a distinctive cultural and tourism destination. The recognition is expected to attract more visitors and contribute to the sustainable development of local tourism, in harmony with preserving national identity.
