Over the years, Điện Biên’s journalism sector has made remarkable strides in both scale and quality. The province currently hosts two local press agencies: the Điện Biên Phủ Newspaper and the Điện Biên Arts and Literature Magazine along with 13 representative offices and resident reporters from the Central press agencies. Nearly 200 journalists, editors, and correspondents are actively engaged in professional reporting across the region.
Local publications have become increasingly dynamic, offering richer content and more engaging formats. Moving beyond traditional print, radio, and television, local media has rapidly expanded into digital platforms, including online newspapers, internet TV, and social media, delivering fast, multi-dimensional, and interactive information to the public.
As the country in general and Điện Biên in particular strive for modernization, journalism nationwide, and in Điện Biên in particular, stands at a critical crossroads. The explosion of information technology, the rise of social media, and unpredictable global developments demand heightened agility and credibility. The fiercest challenge today is the intensifying battle for information. News now flows not only from official outlets but also across a myriad of digital channels, requiring journalists to assert their role as providers of trustworthy and accurate information. With speed becoming paramount, journalists must remain quick yet precise, resisting the pitfalls of misinformation.

Modern audiences demand more than just answers to “what happened?” They want to know “why,” “how,” and “what can be done?” This evolving expectation places pressure on journalists to refine their expertise, master multimedia storytelling (writing, photography, filming, video editing, graphics), and develop analytical thinking and domain knowledge to deliver in-depth, high-quality journalism.
In the face of these demands, Điện Biên’s journalists have responded with more than just awareness. They have taken bold action and achieved tangible results. A striking example is the digital transformation of the Điện Biên Phủ Newspaper. Journalist Trịnh Thị Huyền, editor in charge of digital content, shared: “We’ve built a robust digital ecosystem. The province’s radio and television YouTube channel now has 228,000 subscribers, our TikTok account has 23,000 followers and over 207,000 likes, and the official Facebook fan page boasts 128,000 followers. On average, our YouTube channel gains more than 10,000 new subscribers per month, a figure that reflects strong public interest, including from international viewers.”
Across platforms, the newsroom prioritizes breaking news and stories that reflect everyday life. The Facebook fan page covers a broader range of issues readers care deeply about. YouTube hosts feature programs and in-depth documentaries, along with complete newscasts. This strategy has sparked enormous engagement, extending the province’s message far and wide. Beyond pre-produced content, the team also livestreams and rebroadcasts cultural, artistic, and political events via YouTube, offering audiences greater flexibility beyond traditional TV and fostering deeper real-time connection, all through a single mobile device.
Since late 2024, the Điện Biên Phủ Newspaper’s digital publication has undergone a strong revamp. Embracing the mantra “standing still is falling behind,” reporters and editors have taken initiative in upskilling. No longer waiting for instructions, they seek out training, learn from each other, and evolve from single-skill reporters into versatile multimedia journalists who can operate independently across platforms. They constantly explore new angles and storytelling formats to produce impactful, thought-provoking journalism, from in-depth analyses and investigative series to interactive graphics (infographics, megastories) and AI-powered digital content.
Still, the rapid rise of artificial intelligence has sparked serious reflection in newsrooms. The bigger concern isn’t about being replaced, but about how to preserve journalism’s core values and keep the “soul” of every story intact. Journalist Phạm Ngọc Dương from the Điện Biên Phủ Newspaper observed: “AI is becoming increasingly sophisticated, capable of creating articles, images, and videos with impressive realism. That means the core role of journalists must evolve. We need to emphasize qualities machines can’t replicate: deep analysis, empathy, ethics, and, above all, building trust with our audience. Journalism isn’t just about facts; it’s about emotions and human connection. No matter how advanced AI gets, it can’t replace that.”
During a recent gathering marking the 100th anniversary of the Vietnam’s Revolutionary Press Day (June 21), Trần Quốc Cường, Member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Điện Biên provincial Party Committee, reaffirmed the press’s critical role in local development. He also outlined a strategic vision for the province’s media landscape: press agencies must continually innovate both content and operational methods, effectively apply digital technologies, and expand into multimedia journalism in line with modern consumption trends. Traditional models should transition toward digital journalism to enhance the reach and impact of public communication. Importantly, the shift should also move from “reporting” to “proposing” and “solution-oriented” journalism to elevate the quality and influence of Điện Biên’s press.
This is not only recognition, but a guiding light, a strategic direction for Điện Biên journalism’s ongoing transformation. With a strong foundation, a proactive and adaptable team, and the province’s leadership offering clear vision, there is every reason to believe Điện Biên’s journalists are ready to thrive in the digital era, continuing to serve as a vital bridge between the Party, the government, and the people, and contributing significantly to the province’s ongoing progress.
