From early morning, the area of Hỏm Hốc village in Mường Mùn commune has been bustling with the sounds of people and motorbikes transporting seedlings up the hillsides. On the newly cleared hillsides, each pre-dug pit is ready, and villagers are urgently planting the very first coffee trees of the new season. Hỏm Hốc village possesses the largest area converted to coffee cultivation in Mường Mùn commune. By the end of 2025, the entire village recorded more than 60 ha of coffee, and this year, residents continue to register an expansion of another 130 ha, raising the total area to nearly 200 ha.
Lò Văn Giót, a resident of Hỏm Hốc village, shared that last year his family converted more than 2 ha of upland fields to cultivate coffee, and since the plants have grown very well, he continues to register an additional 6 ha this year. He added that his entire family and fellow villagers are currently concentrating on sowing to keep up with the seasonal timeline, ensuring good plant growth.
In 2026, Mường Mùn commune aims to plant 1,141.79 ha of new coffee and 443 ha of macadamia, with the participation of 1,421 households, requiring a total demand of nearly 4 million coffee seedlings and more than 61,000 macadamia trees. Following months of preparing land funds, digging pits, and gathering seedlings and supplies, on June 22, the Mường Mùn commune People’s Committee organized a launch ceremony for planting and caring for coffee and macadamia trees in 2026. At the ceremony, specialized officials guided residents through each technical step, such as trimming bent taproots, slicing seedling polybags, placing plants in correct positions, backfilling soil, forming water-retaining basins, and wrapping nylon sheets to protect bases, aiming to limit pests and elevate survival rates.
Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, Chairman of the Mường Mùn commune People’s Committee, stated that with a methodical approach and proactivity from dissemination to seed preparation, following the launch ceremony, the commune People’s Committee continues to launch an emulation movement to plant coffee and macadamia trees throughout the commune, with a firm determination to complete 100% of the coffee development plan within July.
In 2025, Chiềng Sinh commune planted more than 310 ha of new coffee and 182 ha of macadamia, exceeding the assigned plan by 151%. Promoting the achieved results and implementing Plan No.1850/KH-UBND, in 2026, Chiềng Sinh commune is deploying the new cultivation of 718 ha of coffee and 400 ha of macadamia under a linkage format.
Right from the beginning of the year, the commune People’s Committee directed specialized agencies to prepare seedling sources, step up dissemination, and mobilize residents to register the conversion of low-efficiency upland areas to plant coffee and macadamia, while launching an emulation movement among villages and hamlets to create a vibrant atmosphere across the commune. Following careful preparation, on June 15, Chiềng Sinh organized a launch for planting new coffee and macadamia across the commune, and on the hillsides, residents are taking advantage of rainy days to complete their sowing plans.
By the end of 2025, the family of Quàng Thị Cân in Đông Thấp village, Chiềng Sinh commune, had developed 2 ha of coffee and nearly 5 ha of macadamia. Realizing initial efficiency, this year she continues to convert all her remaining upland area to cultivate coffee, noting that since the launch ceremony, her family has mobilized labor to concentrate on planting to complete it within June, feeling very secure with the specific technical instructions from officials.
Đỗ Văn Sơn, Chairman of the Chiềng Sinh commune People’s Committee, stated that up to this moment, the entire commune has newly planted over 200 ha of coffee trees. Alongside accelerating the progress of new planting, the commune pays special attention to the care and protection of trees after planting, and specialized agencies regularly visit the grassroots-level to provide technical guidance, monitor growth processes, and promptly support residents in handling arising issues to guarantee the highest survival rate.
The year 2026 marks the first year of implementing the goal to develop coffee and macadamia plants under Resolution No.11-NQ/TU of the Provincial Party Committee’s Executive Board. Accordingly, the provincial People’s Committee issued Plan No.1850/KH-UBND with the target that in 2026, the entire province will develop around 12,000 ha of crops, encompassing 5,930 ha of coffee, 5,930 ha of intercropped macadamia, and 140 ha of purebred macadamia.
Immediately after the plan was issued, 43 out of 43 communes assigned with targets built detailed plans and established working groups to visit each village and hamlet to disseminate and guide residents to register conversion areas, prepare grounds, and organize simultaneous deployment. Forces of officials, civil servants, Youth Union members, militia, and mass organizations were mobilized to support residents in digging pits, transporting seedlings, providing technical guidance, and caring for trees after planting.
By June 20, the entire province had dug more than 35.46 million pits for planting coffee and macadamia trees, reaching 164.08% of the plan, and completed gathering and applying basal fertilizer, creating a favorable foundation to accelerate sowing progress upon entering the rainy season. According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, by June 16, the entire province had newly planted nearly 480 ha of coffee across 13 communes and more than 80 ha of macadamia across four communes, with progress expected to surge in the final weeks of June and July, which stands as the most favorable weather window for trees to take root and develop.
Alongside accelerating tree planting progress, localities also pay special attention to technical elements to upgrade the survival rate of the trees and the quality of raw material zones in the future. Specialized officials frequently stick close to the grassroots-level to directly guide residents through the workflows of planting, caring, preventing pests, and protecting young trees in the initial stage.
From upland plots that previously cultivated primarily corn and cassava, rows of coffee and macadamia are now gradually greening the land, opening up expectations for large-scale commodity production zones, contributing to upgrading incomes, improving local lives, and step-by-step shifting the provincial agricultural economic structure.
According to the plan of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the entire newly planted area of coffee and macadamia in 2026 will be completed before July 30. Driven by the drastic involvement of the entire political system, the consensus of the people, and favorable weather conditions, the goal of greening 12,000 ha of coffee and macadamia is being step-by-step materialized. Each seedling planted in the ground today does not only contribute to fulfilling the year’s targets but also lays the foundation for sustainable raw material zones, creating a driver for Điện Biên’s agricultural economic development in the coming years.
