The Cockscomb Flower Festival is the ancient traditional Lunar New Year (Tết) ceremony of the Cống people. The rituals that take place during the Flower Festival, in addition to their sacred spiritual elements, also include the participation of folk performing arts. The festival draws the community towards their ancestral roots and expresses gratitude to the spirits and the local land gods of their place of residence.
The Festival is also an occasion for the Cống people to rest, have fun, and relax after days of hard work; for children and grandchildren to show gratitude to their grandparents and parents; for parents to thank their ancestors; for villagers to thank each other; and to thank the heavens, earth, and spirits for granting favorable rain and wind, bountiful crops, and good health.
Vũ Đức Thiệp, Vice Chairman of the Nậm Kè commune People’s Committee, said: Through the activities in the Cockscomb Flower Festival, we aim to honor and preserve the cultural identity of the Cống ethnic group. At the same time, we encourage and motivate the artisans and the Cống ethnic community to raise their awareness of preserving the traditional cultural beauty of their people, enriching the treasury of Vietnamese culture with a deeper national identity.
The Cockscomb Flower Festival is a unique cultural highlight, contributing to promoting the image of Nậm Kè, a land rich in tradition and diverse in culture, to tourists from inside and outside the province.
