Experiencing Westernmost point

ĐBP - Điện Biên - the westernmost land of the Fatherland, where days are longer, the sun sets last, and a rooster’s crow is heard across three countries.

The journey to Milestone 0 - A Pa Chải at the junction of the borders of Việt Nam, Lào, and China is an exciting experience for anyone to discover cultural identities, majestic natural landscapes, and the sacred feeling of touching the nation’s sovereignty landmark.

To reach A Pa Chải in Sín Thầu commune, one must travel over 250 km from the urban center of Điện Biên Phủ. National Highway 4H leading to A Pa Chải winds along mountainsides and sharp curves. The road clings to mountain slopes like a thread; advancing toward Sín Thầu, houses grow sparse, separated by rolling high mountain ranges. This route was once considered one of the most arduous in the Northwest and the most remote, isolated journey to reach the border milestone.

Traditional cultural values preserved through the ethnic costumes of the Hà Nhì people.

Amid the undulating border mountains and forests, Mường Nhé Nature Reserve, spanning over 45,000 ha across Sín Thầu, Mường Nhé, and Nậm Kè communes, is home to hundreds of rare flora and fauna species. Mường Nhé Nature Reserve possesses a diverse ecosystem, preserving numerous precious genetic resources. The primeval forests here preserve habitats, regulate water sources, and protect the greenery of the Fatherland’s borderlands. The rich biodiversity makes the journey exploring the nation’s westernmost point even more impressive and unforgettable.

The journey experiencing the frontier in Sín Thầu cannot be complete without learning about, interacting with the culture, and savoring the cuisine of the local ethnic people. The Hà Nhì, the predominant ethnic group in Sín Thầu, still preserve many traditional cultural values, from attire, rituals, and customs to earthen rammed-wall houses (nhà trình tường). The distinctive architecture of rammed-earth houses with thatched roofs of the Hà Nhì creates a unique highlight attracting visitors. Hà Nhì women hand-embroider and preserve traditional costumes adorned with geometric motifs, silver coins, and vibrant colors dominated by striking red. Local cuisine is quite diverse with unique dishes made from natural ingredients such as bamboo shoots and smoked meats. Several families in Sín Thầu have established homestays to welcome guests, provide meals and lodging, and support visitors in experiencing the daily life of local compatriots.

Milestone 0 and A Pa Chải Flagpole are the next unmissable experiential destinations on the journey conquering the westernmost point. Atop Khoang La San peak at an altitude of nearly 1,900 m, the granite Milestone 0 stands serenely between three nations, marking the sacred sovereignty of the Fatherland. From the milestone, looking around reveals mountain ranges stretching endlessly to the horizon, villages nestled in valleys, and the solitary road clinging to the mountainside. The vast sky and earth and rolling mountains evoke a breathtaking, indescribable sensation at the frontier.

The road up to A Pa Chải is now far more convenient thanks to transportation investments and upgrades. What was once a dirt trail winding through forests has become an asphalt national highway connecting the border region with lowland areas and centers. The widened road brings vehicles directly into villages, helping children travel to school conveniently and transporting goods between the lowlands and the highland border. This transformation has brought the westernmost point closer to all regions of the Fatherland. In particular, A Pa Chải Flagpole, built atop a 1,459-meter mountain peak, stands majestically amidst the vast jungle, becoming a sacred symbol of national sovereignty. This is a must-visit destination for anyone arriving in Sín Thầu.

Bonding military-civilian solidarity in the border region.

A Pa Chải Flagpole was inaugurated on May 7, 2025, on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory. The flagpole is located 1,387 m from Milestone 0 at the border tripoint, standing 45.19 m tall, with a 37.5 m² red flag with a yellow star fluttering on the border mountain peak. The path leading to the flagpole consists of 519 stone steps following natural terrain, symbolizing the solidarity and unity of the 19 ethnic groups of Điện Biên province. Each stone step is not only a physical stride to conquer the landscape, but also an experiential journey of patriotism and national pride. Looking up at the national flag from the border sovereignty landmark, every Việt Namese citizen feels a surge of sacred emotion and love for the homeland and country. A Pa Chải Flagpole stands as a vivid symbol of national spirit, harmoniously linking cultural and historical heritage preservation and border sovereignty protection with sustainable tourism development.

The journey experiencing the westernmost frontier, immersing in the culture of the Hà Nhì ethnic people, savoring local cuisine, taking in majestic natural landscapes, and touching the border milestone leaves an indelible impression on everyone visiting A Pa Chải, Sín Thầu. Travel and experience to foster greater love for the Fatherland. This place will become a special destination on the national tourism map. A Pa Chải Flagpole is a “living landmark,” reminding every Việt Namese citizen of the responsibility to safeguard every sacred inch of the Fatherland’s soil.
