Processing industry elevates agricultural products

ĐBP - From rice, coffee, and macadamia to characteristic local produce, the value of agricultural products lies not only in harvest yield, but is determined at the processing stage.

Oriented toward commercial agricultural development, Điện Biên is progressively investing in technology, establishing concentrated raw material zones, and promoting linkages across production, processing, and consumption, thereby enhancing the competitiveness and added value of local farm produce.

Elevating value from raw material zones

These days, inside the workshop of Tâm Thiện Cooperative in Thanh An commune, the production atmosphere is bustling. Replacing numerous manual steps of the past, modern machinery runs continuously, from husking to finished rice polishing. Adopting new technology reduces manual labor, minimizes the rate of broken rice and rice chips, and elevates the quality of grains post-processing.

Operational since 2020, Tâm Thiện Cooperative focuses on purchasing paddy rice and building a high-quality rice brand. On average each day, the cooperative processes roughly 50 tons of paddy, yielding around 30 tons of rice. Facing increasing market demands, the unit invested in a modern, closed processing line.

Trần Thị Hương Quế, Director of Tâm Thiện Cooperative, shared that operating the new processing system produces more appealing rice and increases output 6 to 7 times compared to past manual machinery, earning strong customer favor. To date, the cooperative’s products have entered multiple northern provinces, accounting for 80% of its market share, with plans underway to expand into southern markets where consumer interest is also rising.

Advantages in raw material areas provide a solid foundation for Thanh An to develop its rice commodity chain. The entire commune cultivates over 1,972 ha of double-crop rice. During the recent spring crop, due to natural disasters, yield reached only over 3.5 tons/ha. Farmers have been mobilized to apply science and technology, focusing on high-quality varieties such as Séng Cù and Tám Thơm. Thanh An currently has 74 raw paddy and rice milling and processing facilities, with 66 out of 66 facilities meeting environmental protection requirements.

Thanks to modern processing technology investments, Tâm Thiện Cooperative in Thanh An commune has elevated the quality of its finished rice products.

In Mường Ảng, the story of elevating farm produce centers on coffee - one of the province’s key products. With over 1,900 ha of coffee, including 1,813 ha under commercial harvest and 150 ha in basic establishment, Mường Ảng’s average annual fresh coffee cherry output reaches 12,000 to 14,000 tons, equivalent to 3,500 to 3,900 tons of commercial green coffee beans. Notably, raw material zones can be augmented from neighboring communes, ensuring a relatively stable supply for processing activities.

To further enhance quality through modern, efficient industrial processing investments, Detech Coffee Joint Stock Company recently surveyed raw material zones, mother coffee gardens, nurseries, and a 13-ha proposed site for a deep coffee processing plant in Mường Ảng commune. If implemented, the project will open new opportunities for Mường Ảng coffee to transition strongly from raw material production to deep processing, generating added value right at the source.

Creating momentum for agricultural products

Initial grassroots models demonstrate that investing in processing is becoming a vital link in elevating the value of Điện Biên agricultural products. As production expands, merely selling raw produce fails to realize potential value.

Currently, the province has approximately 5,156 ha of various vegetables, over 8,120 ha of coffee, more than 12,360 ha of macadamia, and roughly 4,160 ha of fruit trees. In 2026, the province targets expanding production zones: coffee to over 13,130 ha, macadamia to nearly 14,900 ha, and fruit trees to 5,000 ha, tied to quality enhancement and value chain development. However, bottlenecks persist. The deep processing rate remains low, linkages between raw material zones and enterprises are loose, and the competitiveness of many products has not matched potential. These are challenges that must be addressed as Điện Biên expands its commercial production acreage.

By 2030, the province aims to establish concentrated commercial production zones totaling around 70,000 ha, including approximately 40,000 ha of macadamia, over 20,000 ha of coffee, and roughly 3,000 ha of fruit trees. An expanding raw material base demands synchronized investment in processing systems to secure stable outlets while raising product value. Deep processing is thus identified as a fundamental solution.

Modern machinery, technology, and production lines enhance quality, extend shelf life, reduce post-harvest losses, and create diverse product lines that better satisfy domestic and export demands. When farm produce is processed locally, more added value is retained within the supply chain. The Department of Agriculture and Environment has formulated implementation plans, provided specific support guidelines, and strengthened connections between enterprises, investors, localities, cooperatives, and farmers, focusing on concentrated raw material zones and production-processing-consumption linkages.

At its 4th session, the provincial People’s Council passed Resolution No. 23, supplementing support mechanisms to clear bottlenecks in capital, technology, processing, and markets. Accordingly, the province provides financial support of up to 30% of investment costs for agricultural processing and preservation facilities; 50% of funding for smart agriculture development; and VND 15 million to VND 20 million per hectare for converting rice land to high-value crops. Notably, 100% of costs for granting growing area codes and packaging facility codes are supported.

For the coffee sub-sector, the province is executing support policies for building processing and preservation plants locally and assisting in establishing national OCOP branding for key products. Encouraging small-scale processors to transition into concentrated processing facilities helps resolve environmental issues, enhances product quality, and facilitates compliance with technical standards.

Investing in industrial processing is unlocking room for Điện Biên’s agriculture to shift from broad expansion to depth, quality, and value. With well-planned raw material zones, synchronized processing technology, and tightly integrated supply chain actors, local agricultural products have added opportunities to elevate branding, expand markets, and meet increasingly stringent consumer standards.
