The site where the red flag with a golden star flies high amidst the westernmost sky has become a gathering point for historical, cultural, and political values, while simultaneously opening up an attractive destination on the journey to explore the borderlands.
Technical specifications and cultural architecture
The project commenced in November 2023 with a total investment of VND 31 billion mobilized from socialized capital sources. It was constructed on the Khoan La San mountain range at an altitude of 1,459m above sea level, approximately 1,387m away from the junction marker of the tri-border area between Vietnam, Laos, and China. The flagpole features an octagonal body standing 45.19m high, with a flag area of 37.5m², creating a prominent highlight amidst the vast landscapes of the Northwest mountains and forests.
The architectural space of the project is deeply integrated with the distinctive cultural values of the local ethnic groups. Five reliefs placed at the base of the flagpole vividly recreate themes of legends, beliefs, festivals, production labor, folk songs, traditional dances, and the iconic xòe circle of ethnic solidarity. Perched at the peak of the flagpole is a relief themed around Uncle Hồ with the ethnic groups of the Northwest, sending a profound message of solidarity and the close bond between the Party, the State, and highland compatriots.
The journey up to the flagpole also offers a special experience as visitors conquer 519 steps winding along the mountainside to reach the high point where the national flag flies. Every step along this path becomes a journey of sensing natural beauty, history, and the sacred significance of the westernmost land.
Pride of border residents and cross-country journeys
For the indigenous people, the A Pa Chải flagpole is a source of immense pride born out of their love for the homeland and their awareness of safeguarding the borderlands. As a native of A Pa Chải village in Sín Thầu commune, Chang Khừ Pứ felt deeply moved when stepping onto this symbolic structure.
Chang Khừ Pứ shared: “I was born and raised in the land of A Pa Chải, so seeing the flagpole constructed right on the peak of Khoan La San makes me incredibly proud. This is a place that asserts the country’s sovereignty, helping our people understand and love our homeland more, while heightening our responsibility to protect this border land. Standing beneath the national flag and looking out over our homeland, I feel deeply moved and proud to be a child of the nation’s westernmost point.”
Beyond being the pride of border compatriots, the A Pa Chải flagpole has also become a major destination drawing travelers on their journeys to discover the sacred landmarks of the country. The family of Phương Thùy, a tourist from Kiên Giang province, spent six days traveling across Vietnam just to set foot here.
Phương Thùy shared: “The road here is very long and arduous, but upon reaching the flagpole and witnessing the national flag flying amidst the mountains and forests, all weariness vanished. This is a very special feeling because I can sense national pride and the sacredness of the border land more clearly. After visiting A Pa Chải, my family will continue our journey to the Lũng Cú flagpole to explore more destinations tied to national sovereignty.”
Impressions from travelers and future tourism prospects
Võ Thị Ngọc Thúy, a tourist arriving from Huế, was highly emotional during her first time setting foot at the westernmost point of the country. Thúy expressed her deep impression of the majestic natural landscapes and the thorough investment poured into the A Pa Chải flagpole project, noting that this destination holds a unique appeal for those who love exploration, history, culture, and the highland beauty of the Northwest.
Võ Thị Ngọc Thúy stated: “Before coming here, I had seen many pictures of the A Pa Chải flagpole, but directly standing beneath the national flag and seeing the vast border mountains and forests before my eyes brings an indescribable feeling. The journey up here has sections that are quite far and challenging, but upon touching the flagpole, I feel immensely proud to be present at a sacred landmark of the country. This is a meaningful experience that helps me understand more about the land and people of Điện Biên, while appreciating even more the values preserved by ancestral generations.”
Evidently, the A Pa Chải flagpole has become a “red address” in revolutionary traditional education, awakening love for the homeland and country among the younger generation, while simultaneously generating a powerful driving force to boost tourism development in the westernmost region. Currently, the route leading up to the A Pa Chải flagpole has been invested in and concreted, allowing automobiles to move right up to the base of the steps. Facilitating easier access to the destination allows more tourists the opportunity to discover this special land. From the A Pa Chải flagpole, the wide-open views of the border mountains and forests coupled with the moments of the national flag flying high have become unforgettable imprints on the journey back to the nation’s westernmost point.
