A special race
From early morning, the grounds of the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Headquarters buzzed with activity: whistles, flags, and streams of eager participants preparing for a nearly 8km uphill journey to conquer Pu Tó Cọ peak. Held for the first time, the event aimed to create a distinctive destination and memorable experiences for sports and history enthusiasts nationwide.
As athletes’ names echoed through the vast forest, the mountains of Mường Phăng seemed to awaken. Participants, carefully prepared, eyes alight with anticipation, came from many ethnic groups and regions across Việt Nam, joined by international friends. Different backgrounds, one course, one shared resolve.
In a landscape steeped in history, once marked by the footsteps of General Võ Nguyên Giáp, today’s strides carried a different spirit: pushing personal limits while deepening appreciation for the values that shaped history. From the starting line, the route quickly led runners into the pristine Mường Phăng forest. Narrow trails wound past old tree trunks; shafts of early sunlight filtered through the canopy onto red earth; dust rose lightly with each movement. After just a few hundred meters, the terrain steepened, forcing runners to adjust their pace and breathing.
Lò Văn Đoàn, a familiar face on the province’s amateur running circuit, claimed the gold medal. Yet for him, this race carried special meaning. “Pu Tó Cọ isn’t a flat course where results come easily”, he said. “It demands great perseverance and effort. But my main goal wasn’t victory, it was to truly feel and take pride in the sacrifices of our forebears.”
The ascent constantly changed: sections so narrow only one person could pass; soft, slippery ground; sharp bends requiring careful footing. On the third segment - one of the toughest - many runners noticeably slowed. Still, not one of the nearly 600 participants dropped out. Seven-year-old Phạm Hồng Quân (Group 7, Điện Biên Phủ ward), the youngest competitor, completed the climb with his family in nearly four hours.
“At times I thought he couldn’t make it,” said his mother, Nguyễn Thị Phương. “But fellow runners cheered him on enthusiastically. Especially meaningful were the messages on banners prepared by the organizers along the route: “This road is easier than the artillery hauling route of 1954”. They were a huge source of encouragement that helped him finish.”
A rare and striking feature of the Pu Tó Cọ climb was the spirit of sharing among runners. Though strangers, they readily shared water, offered helping hands over difficult stretches, and supported one another throughout the course. Such moments repeated along the route, becoming a powerful motivation for each participant to overcome challenges and themselves.
Returning to a historic land
After hours of steady effort uphill, Pu Tó Cọ’s summit emerged through a veil of thin clouds. Guiding flags fluttered in the wind, adding color to the finish line moment. Early finishers cheered; those arriving later, hands on knees, breathing hard, still smiled broadly. Emotions overflowed.
Many runners lingered at the summit, capturing a once-in-a-lifetime moment, gazing down into the misty valley, reflecting on the path they had just conquered, and on the journeys of generations past. Each carried a personal story, united by a shared reverence for history’s enduring values.
According to Nguyễn Hoàng Hiệp, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, this was far more than a typical mountain race. The nearly 8km route offered distinctive experiences, passing former living and working shelters within the heritage site, tunnels through the mountain, forest trails beneath the Mường Phăng canopy, hillsides of wild sunflowers, and finally the 1,700m-high Pu Tó Cọ summit, home to the observation post of the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign.
“To heighten the experience and challenge,” Hiệp added, “the organizers hid images of campaign related artifacts along the route: camouflage leaf hats, padded jackets, rubber sandals, binoculars, Điện Biên soldier badges, encouraging participants to find them. The messages conveyed through these artifacts are themselves valuable history lessons.”
Since the event, Pu Tó Cọ has been widely seen as a promising destination for trail runners and experiential tourism. Its varied terrain, untouched landscapes, and close ties to the Mường Phăng heritage site give it a unique edge unmatched by many localities. In practice, running groups from Sơn La and Ninh Bình combined the race with short trips to explore the site, trek through forests, and visit the Mường Thanh basin.
As the final footprints pressed into Pu Tó Cọ’s red earth, the race concluded. Yet its echoes live on, in runners’ stories, in check-in photos shared across social platforms. Amid the vast Mường Phăng forest, once the nerve center of a campaign that “resounded across five continents,” today’s generations rediscovered themselves along the trail.
Pu Tó Cọ, once an unassuming mountain, has become a symbol of endurance, resilience, and unwavering resolve: qualities etched into the history of Điện Biên Phủ and reflected in a Điện Biên rising with renewed strength today.
