Leveraging its wealth of historical and cultural sites, most notably the Điện Biên Phủ Battlefield Special National Monument, the application of technology is being phased in to align with local realities. This journey involves not just preserving the past, but making it interactive and accessible to a global audience through a digital lens.
The digitalization of historical data has followed a clear roadmap. Since 2022, the province has completed the virtualization of 15 national monuments using 2D and 3D imaging, including iconic sites like the Campaign Headquarters, A1 Hill, the General De Castries bunker, and the Martyrs’ Memorial Temple. By 2024, the Điện Biên Phủ Victory Museum became a focal point for innovation, with 960 typical artifacts digitized in 3D and integrated into a searchable management system. These upgrades introduced virtual reality (VR), 3D mapping, and 360-degree virtual tours that allow users to explore the exhibits via the internet, complete with automated narrations, making history accessible even to those who cannot visit in person.
Information kiosks arranged by theme provide multilingual content, while mobile applications integrated with QR codes allow for rapid information lookups. Cutting-edge experiences like VR battle simulations and augmented reality (AR) allow visitors to observe 3D artifacts within a real-world space, creating a more intuitive and memorable approach to learning history. Nguyễn Thị Lưỡng, a guide at the Điện Biên Phủ Victory Museum, noted that while technology is a powerful tool, especially for engaging younger, more tech-savvy generations, it remains a medium for the storyteller. In her view, the depth of understanding and the ability to convey the emotional weight of history remains the core responsibility of the human guide.
Vũ Thị Tuyết Nga, Director of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory Museum, emphasized that digitalization is an inevitable requirement in the modern era. The museum is “changing its clothes,” moving away from static displays to become a living connection between the past and the present. This open-space approach has already proven successful, with the museum welcoming over 40,000 visitors since the beginning of 2026. This momentum is now being expanded across the province’s wider tourism sector.
In 2025, the province continued to upgrade its management software and expanded the digitization of intangible cultural heritages and artifacts. A smart tourism project is currently underway to digitize 14 major locations, ranging from ethnic markets and community tourism villages to scenic spots like Pá Khoang Lake, Pha Đin Pass, Landmark Zero, and the Mường Thanh field. By integrating data, images, and descriptions onto a digital platform, the province is making it easier for travelers to plan and connect their journeys.
The method of promotion has also shifted significantly. To bring the image of “Điện Biên - A Heroic Historical Epic, A Unique Cultural Destination” closer to tourists, the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has partnered with the Vitamin Network Media Co., Ltd. to boost communication on digital platforms. This includes the production of short videos and livestreams at cultural events and festivals, ensuring the local identity resonates in the digital space.
Nguyễn Thị Thanh Chuyên, Deputy Director of the Department, stated that technology is being applied synchronously across accommodation management, travel agencies, and destination databases, with the ultimate goal of allowing visitors to book all services directly via their mobile devices.
Despite these advancements, the path to full digitalization faces certain hurdles. Funding for high-level tech investments remains limited, and the existing technological infrastructure and equipment are not yet fully synchronized across the province. Furthermore, the IT workforce is still relatively thin, and the vast, dispersed nature of the historical monuments requires significant time and manpower to catalog and digitize effectively.
The key to future success lies in the continued allocation of resources, enhancing staff capacity, and strengthening partnerships with technology firms. By gradually unblocking these “bottlenecks,” digital transformation will become a vital engine, opening a sustainable path for Điện Biên’s tourism to develop effectively and practically in accordance with the province’s unique conditions.
