For years, the leadership has prioritized socio-economic development as a crucial political mission to build a solid foundation of public trust and a strong national defense posture. By conducting field surveys of local livelihoods, border guard units have carefully selected support programs that specifically fit the climate and soil conditions of each unique area.
Between 2015 and 2025, the command maintained 16 primary programs and expanded several localized economic models tailored to the region. Notable examples include wet rice cultivation led by the Nậm Kè Border Post and pineapple farming initiated by the Mường Nhà Border Post. In other regions, the Na Cô Sa Border Post has focused on cardamom and cinnamon planting, while the Si Pa Phìn Border Post has seen success with buffalo fattening. These initiatives have successfully opened new economic directions and created sustainable livelihoods for numerous households across the border region.
A prominent success story is the green-skinned pomelo garden model launched by the Thanh Luông Border Post in 2022. Soldiers coordinated with local authorities to select participating households in Pom Khoang and Mó villages, providing them with high-quality seedlings and direct technical guidance on planting and pest control. Lieutenant Colonel Đoàn Thanh Tuấn, Political Officer of the Thanh Luông Border Post, noted that these gardens began yielding stable income in 2024, confirming the initial effectiveness of the model. This success has since spread to over 30 households in the commune, with gardens now ranging in scale from dozens to hundreds of trees.
Beyond economic support, the force has actively advised local governments on infrastructure projects and national target programs. Throughout the 2015-2025 period, the border guards contributed more than 21,580 workdays to help residents with production, repaired over 778 kilometers of village roads, and constructed 13 bridges. Their efforts also extended to repairing 167.2 kilometers of irrigation canals, assisting with the harvest of 180 hectares of crops, and providing over 72,300 seedlings. Furthermore, the force helped build or repair 4,454 houses, directly enabling 2,686 households to escape poverty and stabilize their lives.
The border guard’s presence is equally vital during natural disasters, where over 5,000 personnel have assisted in flood recovery and evacuated residents to safety. Senior Colonel Nhâm Văn Mạnh, Political Commissar of the provincial Border Guard Command, emphasized that a decade of these programs has fundamentally transformed border livelihoods and consolidated national sovereignty. These practical actions have made the image of the soldier in the “green insignia” deeply cherished by the people. By lighting the way for sustainable development, the border guard continues to empower ethnic communities to remain attached to their land and contribute to a stronger, more prosperous border region.
