Mid-Autumn toy market: Vietnamese Products Take the Lead

ĐBP - In these days leading up to the Mid-Autumn Festival, the local market has become vibrant. If in the past imported products dominated Mid-Autumn toys, this year consumer trends have shifted toward traditional items that embody Vietnamese cultural values.

Reports show that around 80% of Mid-Autumn toys this year are traditional handmade products such as star-shaped lanterns, drums, masks, lion heads, rotating lanterns, and hanging lanterns shaped like carp, cats, and rabbits. The shift in consumer behavior is clear, as people increasingly favor handcrafted, traditional goods.

Consumers choose traditional Mid-Autumn toys in Điện Biên Phủ ward.

At toy shops in Điện Biên Phủ ward, the shelves are filled with a wide variety of Mid-Autumn toys in different designs and price ranges. This year’s market also reflects creativity and innovation in design. Alongside familiar products, many lanterns have been improved with durable, lightweight, reusable materials. Some large carp-shaped lanterns feature sharp printed patterns and bright colors, combining tradition with modern aesthetics.

Nguyễn Hằng, a shop owner in Điện Biên Phủ ward, said: “Since the seventh lunar month, we have stocked Mid-Autumn toys. This year, many parents prioritize traditional, eco-friendly products for their children. My shop has reduced imported toys and increased domestic handmade goods to meet new preferences while ensuring safety for children.”

According to surveys, toy prices remain stable compared to last year, ranging from VND 20,000 to VND 100,000. Specifically, small star lanterns cost VND 20,000-30,000 each, larger ones VND 50,000-70,000; paper masks are VND 15,000-50,000; and drums range from VND 40,000-100,000.

In addition to traditional toys, a few modern items are still sold at higher prices, but this segment no longer dominates. Consumers now focus more on origin, safety, and educational value rather than simply seeking low prices. Modern toys such as superhero figures and electronic rabbits sell for VND 100,000-200,000, while dolls and LED carp lanterns cost VND 150,000-250,000 per set.

While choosing a bamboo lantern for her daughter, Trần Thu Hà from Mường Thanh ward said: “This year, traditional handmade toys have very nice designs. That’s why I chose Vietnamese products made with safe, eco-friendly materials.”

In recent years, imported goods, mostly from China, have been less favored due to concerns about origin and quality. According to local traders, this is also why consumers are turning back to traditional products.

Traditional handmade items make up as much as 80% of the Mid-Autumn toy market.

Clearly, in the Mid-Autumn toy market, traditional items are reclaiming their position. Although “hot trend” products are still available, the fact that consumers prioritize handcrafted, domestic goods shows that the spirit of “Vietnamese people give priority to Vietnamese goods” is increasingly valued.
