In Điện Biên, the transition toward a green and sustainable agricultural nền kinh tế is being implemented through steady, calculated steps. This evolution has already yielded distinct results, opening new paths for rural economic growth in this mountainous province where agricultural land accounts for approximately 93% of the natural area.
The province has prioritized restructuring its agricultural sector by enhancing value-added services and fostering sustainable growth. This focus has led to the formation of several concentrated commodity production areas linked to key crops. Currently, macadamia cultivation has surpassed 12,360 hectares, while coffee covers more than 8,390 hectares, and pineapple cultivation spans over 1,046 hectares. These concentrated raw material zones create favorable conditions for deep processing and branding, which in turn attracts significant corporate investment into the local agricultural landscape.
A prime example of this success can be found in Mường Nhà commune, where the “Honey Pineapple” has become a flagship crop on sloped lands. These pineapples, which average 2 to 3kg per fruit and hold a 3-star OCOP certification, have significantly boosted local incomes. Under the leadership of Đặng Văn Tuấn, Chairman of the Mường Nhà People’s Committee, the commune is not resting on its laurels. Plans for 2026 include diversifying with an additional 120 hectares of coffee and 120 hectares of macadamia, alongside organic experiments like the 1.7-hectare green J-chili model.
The application of scientific and technical advances has become the “key” to improving productivity while minimizing environmental impact. Models following VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic standards are being scaled up across the province. In Mường Thanh ward, Carafarm Vietnam Co., Ltd. has successfully developed a nearly 5-hectare sustainable model featuring organic red oranges that produce roughly 30 tons of fruit annually. Similarly, the Si Pa Phìn High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative manages 5 hectares of organic-certified vegetables, and the Nam Dương Cooperative maintains 13 hectares under VietGAP standards.
Perhaps the most sophisticated advancement is the BNS OPEN program implemented on a 60-hectare rice field in Thanh Nưa commune. This circular economic model utilizes high-tech solutions such as alternate wetting and drying for water management, nano-technology fertilizers, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for seeding and spraying. Most notably, the project employs electronic logs for production management and satellite technology to measure greenhouse gas emissions. These innovations not only reduce production costs and increase yields but also pave the way for a low-emission agricultural future.
The roadmap for the 2026-2030 period is anchored in Resolution No.11-NQ/TU, issued on December 31, 2025. The province aims to transform from small-scale, fragmented production to large-scale, technology-driven agriculture tied strictly to market demand. With the synchronized involvement of authorities, businesses, and proactive farmers, Điện Biên’s agriculture is poised for a powerful transformation. By 2030, the goal is to fully establish an agricultural sector that is not only “concentrated and commodity-based” but also “green, smart, and sustainable,” ensuring long-term prosperity for its ethnic communities.
