Green agriculture: A sustainable foundation for Điện Biên

ĐBP - Thanks to the orientation of local authorities and the proactive, flexible spirit of the people, the Agriculture and Environment sector of Điện Biên province is gradually shifting from small-scale, self-sufficient production to commodity production focused on quality, safety, and environmental protection.

This transformation creates sustainable economic value and lays the groundwork for a green agricultural sector that adapts to climate change, links production with the market, and improves local incomes.

In recent years, the concept of green agriculture has evolved from a mere slogan into a reality across the production zones of Điện Biên through specific models and a new production mindset. Moving away from traditional farming habits that relied heavily on natural conditions, farmers are now adopting bio-safety production processes, reducing chemical use, increasing the application of science and technology, and focusing on ecosystem protection.

The Star Apple (Vú sữa Hoàng Kim) orchard of Nguyễn Văn Mười in Noong Háng village, Mường Ảng commune, is cared for using bio-safety methods.

A prime example is the bio-safety fruit orchard model spanning nearly 20 hectares managed by Nguyễn Văn Mười in Noong Háng village, Mường Ảng commune. His family cultivates various trees, including green-skinned pomelo, longan, jackfruit, and Star Apple (Vú sữa Hoàng Kim), while minimizing pesticides in favor of biological pest control. The production process is strictly controlled from soil preparation and organic fertilization to water-saving irrigation and harvesting. This transition not only protects the health of producers and consumers but also contributes to soil rehabilitation, maintaining long-term fertility and reducing resource degradation.

Beyond cultivation, the livestock sector is also moving toward green and sustainable practices. A prominent model is the bio-safety goat farming initiative led by Trần Thế Võ, Director of the Agricultural Service and General Construction Cooperative of Thanh An commune, featuring over 200 goats. The entire process utilizes natural feed sources and biological disease control, ensuring hygiene for both the pens and the surrounding environment. This approach improves product quality and helps build stable outlets for safe, traceable meat products. It demonstrates that medium and small-scale livestock farming can be entirely sustainable if organized scientifically and adapted to local conditions.

Mường Ảng commune serves as the province’s coffee capital with over 1,660 hectares, generating an annual revenue of approximately VND 260 billion. In addition to expanding acreage, the focus has shifted toward enhancing quality, building brands, and diversifying products. Many coffee products have achieved OCOP certification and are now available in supermarkets and tourist spots. Alongside coffee, the locality has formed a fruit-growing region of about 125 hectares, bringing in over VND 5 billion annually, which helps diversify the production structure and reduce economic risks for farmers.

In Tuần Giáo commune, the bold conversion of inefficient sloped land to macadamia, coffee, and fruit trees has opened a new path for agricultural production. Currently, the commune has nearly 2,400 hectares of macadamia and over 600 hectares of coffee, forming concentrated production areas linked to processing and consumption. The locality also promotes the formation of cooperatives and cooperative groups to reorganize production and create links between farmers and enterprises. This synergy reduces input costs, improves product value, and stabilizes output, providing the necessary conditions to apply safety standards and build local agricultural brands.

Across the province, agricultural restructuring is being implemented by selecting key sectors and product groups to enhance productivity and added value. Điện Biên is stepping up the application of science and technology from breeding to harvesting and processing while attracting investment for concentrated production zones. The province’s core products, rice, tea, coffee, macadamia, and rubber, are identified as the pillars of the green agriculture strategy.

In 2025, the total area for rubber, coffee, and tea reached over 11,200 hectares, with coffee bean output at 23,280 tons and rubber latex at 26,750 tons. Meanwhile, the macadamia area exceeded 12,300 hectares. Products like Tủa Chùa tea and Mường Ảng coffee have already established geographical indications, providing a foundation for increased competitiveness. This transformation is the result of close cooperation between the people, cooperatives, enterprises, and local authorities, shaping a modern, environmentally friendly agricultural landscape.
