This large scale production requires a substantial supply of seedlings. Therefore, from the beginning of the year, authorities, agencies, and localities have proactively implemented synchronized solutions such as seed propagation and production linkages to ensure sufficient seedlings for the planting season.
Across the province, preparations for the new coffee and macadamia planting season are in full swing. From key production areas to expansion zones, farmers are actively improving land, digging planting holes, preparing materials, and securing seedling sources in terms of both quantity and quality.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, for coffee, nursery areas have reached 6,007.39 hectares, equivalent to 101.3% of the plan. In addition, enterprises and cooperatives can supply seedlings for approximately 1,513 hectares. However, 12 communes still lack sufficient seedling supply, covering about 1,390 hectares. Meanwhile, the remaining supply is estimated at around 1,590.3 hectares (excluding small scale household nurseries), indicating that with proper coordination among localities, the supply can still meet demand.
For macadamia, the local seedling supply remains limited. Currently, the province has three seedling producers with about 16,000 plants available. This is insufficient to meet planned demand. Enterprises have therefore proactively established linkages and imported seedlings from provinces such as Đắk Lắk, Quảng Ngãi, and Lào Cai, totaling hundreds of thousands of plants. To meet the target, the province needs approximately 857,260 macadamia seedlings, making it essential to mobilize supply from both within and outside the province.
In implementing Resolution No. 11-NQ/TU on restructuring the agricultural sector toward concentrated, green, smart, and sustainable commodity production for 2026-2030, with a vision to 2035, local authorities have reviewed land resources and assessed areas suitable for expanding coffee cultivation. Based on this, farmers have registered planting needs, and communes have calculated seedling demand, organized nurseries, and prepared seedlings for distribution to eligible households.
In 2026, Tủa Thàng commune aims to convert around 100 hectares of upland fields into coffee plantations. However, nearly 1,000 households across six villages have registered to plant coffee on 221 hectares, exceeding the target by 121 hectares.
To ensure seedling supply, Tủa Thàng has adopted a model of purchasing seeds and guiding farmers to propagate seedlings locally. Study visits were organized to learn from successful coffee-growing communes such as Quài Tở and Tuần Giáo. Seed sources are taken from selected mother trees in Quài Tở. According to Phạm Quang Long, Chairman of the commune People’s Committee: “To ensure effective propagation, we collaborate with Pha Đin Coffee Cooperative to guide farmers through all stages, from soil preparation and seed treatment to nursery management. Agricultural staff regularly provide technical support. So far, propagation is basically complete and expected to meet seedling demand for 2026.”
With a target of planting 500 hectares of coffee, Mường Chà commune began establishing nurseries as early as December 2025, producing seedlings for over 450 households. Vàng A Chính, Secretary of the commune Party Committee, said: “We have proactively propagated around 2.7 million coffee seedlings. They are now growing well and ready for distribution for the planting season.”
Alongside local efforts, enterprises and cooperatives have accelerated nursery care to ensure healthy seedlings and timely supply.
Since September 2025, in response to the province’s agricultural restructuring policy, particularly the shift from upland crops to high value industrial crops such as coffee and macadamia, Mường Thanh Green Joint Stock Company has prepared land, secured seed sources, and implemented large scale nurseries. To date, on nearly 6 hectares, the company has propagated 7.1 million coffee seedlings, 1.5 million cardamom seedlings, and linked supply of about 500,000 macadamia seedlings.
Quản Bá Tới, Director of Mường Thanh Green Joint Stock Company, stated that all coffee seeds are carefully selected from elite mother trees in key growing areas such as Quài Tở and Tuần Giáo. The company has signed contracts and is supplying sufficient high quality seedlings to communes including Na Son, Nậm Kè, Mường Nhé, Sáng Nhè, Nậm Nèn, and Phình Giàng, covering a total area of several thousand hectares. Seedlings in the nurseries are growing steadily, and the company is committed to ensuring both quantity and quality in accordance with signed contracts, while also meeting additional demand from local farmers.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, although the province initially planned to plant 5,930 hectares of coffee in 2026, registered planting areas have surged to 12,935.8 hectares, reaching 218.4% of the target. Many localities have exceeded their targets, including Núa Ngam, Mường Nhà, Mường Ảng, Nà Tấu, Mường Mùn, and Chiềng Sinh. This rapid increase poses challenges in ensuring seedling supply for areas beyond the plan. There is also a risk that some farmers may choose low quality seedlings due to limited information or lower prices, potentially affecting productivity.
In response, the agricultural sector has strengthened technical guidance for seedling producers and strictly controlled the entire process, from selecting mother trees and seed collection to propagation and distribution. Inspection and supervision have been intensified to detect and address violations in seed production and trade. Local authorities are also encouraging farmers to choose seedlings from reputable suppliers with clear origins.
Ensuring both the quantity and quality of seedlings is not only an immediate requirement for each planting season but also a strategic factor for the long term development of coffee and macadamia sectors in the province. With well-managed seed sources, farmers can invest confidently, while productivity and product quality improve, contributing to the successful restructuring of the agricultural sector.
